Bath showing a city
A former shipbuilding hub that still retains plenty of old-fashioned, maritime charm, this small city is filled with historic buildings and leafy streets.

Bath is the self-styled “City of Ships,” a scenic and historic town in Maine that takes great pride in its nautical past. Come here to walk riverside paths that were once the site of shipbuilding yards. Other appealing outdoor attractions, including sandy beaches and bird-filled wildlife areas, draw nature lovers from across the country. Many of the elegant, old-fashioned houses lining the streets are now guesthouses or charming independent stores.

The city’s waterside location along the Kennebec River means it has always been ideally placed for shipbuilding. This industry reached its peak locally in the mid-19th century, when the city prospered as it exported ships all over the world. Visit Bath today and find many of the buildings erected during this boom period still standing in its historic district.

Learn more about the city’s fascinating past at the acclaimed Maine Maritime Museum, which offers a beautifully arranged journey through local history. Afterward, join a guided tour of the historic area or hop aboard the Bath Trolley to give your feet a rest.

Take your time exploring the charming stores, restaurants and galleries of Front Street, which has been the city’s main street for centuries. Stop at the nearby Waterfront Park to browse for local produce at Bath’s Farmers Market, held on Thursdays and Saturdays during the warmer months.

Spot ospreys, eagles and interesting and rare birds in beautiful protected areas such as the Josephine Newman Wildlife Sanctuary, the Montsweag Preserve and the Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area. Set aside a day or two to enjoy the two quiet and lovely beaches close to the city: Reid State Park and Popham Beach State Park. Drive to either one of these golden stretches of sand in less than 30 minutes.

Several airports are located close to Bath. Fly to Portland International Airport or Augusta State Airport, the two best-connected choices. Reach the city by car within 40 minutes from either of these airports.
