I served in the military for 23 years. I've slept in tents, sardine can housing, on the concrete under bombers, in warehouses, gym floors, on cots, hotels all over the world, on shipping containers, the back of trucks... I can sleep pretty much anywhere.
This hotel was the most disgusting place I've ever stayed. First, it was in the hood (there was an active police crime investigation occurring when we arrived at 0100). The attendant was behind bullet proof glass. He was polite, though. When we got to the room, the floor was wet. The ceiling had water damage and black mold, the bed had stains on it, the floor had debris all over it, there was no fire alarm, there was some nasty brown substance on one of the walls, no headboard on the bed, chewing gum stuck to the wall where the headboard should be, no towell in the room to shower. I snapped a few pics to show the inside of the room. Not only was the room disgusting, it didn't meet minimum safety requirements to even keep my dog in.
At about 0200, someone knocked on my door and tried to open it. At that point, I decided I'd rather leave and make the drive home rather than have to engage in a gunfight in a hotel room that I paid in excess of $250 for! Outside condition wasn't any better than the inside. Mold and mildew everywhere, cigarette butts everywhere, pool was black and unkept. I'm not trying to get something for free, but I don't think it's right to be charged for a room Icouldn't sleep in.
