Bioluminescent Bay Tours

Kick back on a boat cruise or paddle a kayak as you watch the glowing water below.

Bioluminescent bays that literally glow when the water is disturbed are rare, however visitors to Puerto Rico have the chance to visit three. The best known of these is La Parguera, on Puerto Rico’s southwest coast.

Accessible only by boat, the picturesque bay comes alive at night as the microorganisms that live below the surface begin to glow. Believed to be a defense mechanism, the organisms dart through the water like fireflies. Bioluminescent Bay is a must for nature lovers, and children of all ages thrill to the sight of these other-worldly creatures.

La Parguera is a twenty-minute boat trip from the town of Lajas. When you arrive at the port area, many vendors will offer to take you to the bay. Decide whether you’d rather go as part of a tour group or with a personal guide before you commit.

One option is to gaze through a glass-bottomed boat to see the magic unfold beneath you. On a busy night you’ll immediately notice the glow beneath the surface. Sometimes, tour guides will ensure the microorganisms are active by entering the water themselves.

Bring your swimsuit and a snorkel to swim amongst the bioluminescent creatures. Many tour operators will provide snorkeling equipment, and the water is always warm enough to swim at night. Join a tour at sunset for a picturesque experience both above and below water.

Enjoy a traditional Caribbean meal at the port area of Lajas when you return from your adventure. There are a number of bars and restaurants to choose from. This is a great spot to meet locals or reflect on the journey will fellow travelers.

La Parguera is located on the south west coast of Puerto Rico, approximately 37 miles (60 kilometers) from the city of Ponce. It can be reached by car and there is ample parking at the port in Lajas. Boat tour prices vary depending on whether you go with a tour or have a personal guide. Generally, prices  are modest. La Parguera can be visited every day of the year, however fewer boats operate in the off-season of May through November.

I wore sandals with velcro straps (Tevas). I would suggest those or water shoes.
