Colorful masterpieces by the Spanish postmodernist architect Ricardo Bofill stand on the cliffs above this small bay, creating an interesting scene for photos.

Cala La Manzanera showcases an intriguing contrast between the natural beauty of Calpe’s coast and the talent of a world-famous architect. Here, contemporary buildings rise over a crescent-shaped bay that has been cut out of the rocks by the sea. Visit Cala La Manzanera to get an alternative insight into life at this Costa Blanca resort. Pack your camera and take advantage of great photo opportunities.

Similar to many of Calpe’s beaches, the 1,090-feet (332-meter) Peñón de Ifach rock dominates the views. However, the designs of the multiple award-winning Ricardo Bofill succeed in distracting your eyes from the natural landmark.

Admire the Muralla Roja, a modern apartment block inspired by the styles of the ancient Arab buildings of the Mediterranean and the casbah citadels of North Africa. Note the fortress-like towers, interlocking stairs and connecting bridges. The vivid red and blue color scheme complements the hues of the rugged coastline and sky.

Opposite is the Edificio Xanadu, an experimental lofted garden city. It features protruding cubic sections with concave roofs. Pay attention to how its shape resembles that of the Peñón de Ifach. Climb the stairs behind this landmark to see El Anfiteatro, a collection of luxury vacation homes set around an amphitheater and swimming pool.

Steps lead down the cliffs to the seafront and the derelict Club Social de la Manzanera, which is another Bofill-designed landmark. Catch some rays while sitting on the terraces. Snap an artistic photo of the sea and Peñón de Ifach through the huge round windows.

Cala Manzanera is just a short drive from central Calpe. There are two scenic routes to get here on foot. One is to walk along the coastline from Arenal-Bol Beach. The other is to follow a clifftop path that passes in front of the Bofill buildings.
