The expression 'Country Inn' summons up all sorts of images, mostly appealing ones of cosy nooks and architectural interest, lovely scenery and something individual, quirky and warmly welcoming. The Peacock really doesn't live up to this notion. Clean, comfortable enough and generally ok, the accommodation is not in beamed rooms with interesting features, but a purpose-built bungalow made with very thin walls and rather cramped rooms. The pictures of the bar area suggest idyllic English pubbery, but they are very misleading; just as the breakfast was just like every other hotel breakfast in the world - small cartons of cereal, jugs of fruit juice, dull toast and sachet's of marmalade - so was the rest of the stay. Only slightly colder, damper and less satisfying. At least if you stay in a Travelodge, you know what to expect, and you get it. Staying here felt like a Travelodge experience without the economic benefit and with the aftertaste of disappointment.
