Loved the old country charm and all the cosy places to sit and enjoy good food and wine in front of a open log fire , really couldn't fault the Bear , a wonderful place to stay

We booked this place at the last minute without very high expectations. However we had a wonderful stay at the Bear. The thing we loved the most was the absolutely amazing view from our room. I can’t imagine staying at this property without getting a room with a view to the valley. To add to this was a comfortable bed and very friendly service all around. We especially enjoyed our meals in the busy pub with its cozy atmosphere and good food (including the crumble and sticky toffee pudding). They are very dog friendly- our pup enjoyed the free treats and nice bed for him in our room. There is a beautiful walk just steps outside the hotel and many other walks we enjoyed nearby. We look forward to returning.

I booked 2 nights via expedia but added an additional night a day earlier by telephoning the hotel direct, the only room available for 3 nights was a single so I was effectively downgraded for the 2 nights booked through expedia. I should receive back a credit from expedia, the single room was fine with the exception of the toilet which was installed where use was constricted, if it had been installed at an angle it would have been OK. The arrival, staff and accomodation other than the toilet was excellent

A good stay
Overall very good. Our sleep was disturbed with deliveries to the bar at 4:30am which was not great.

Previous guests hair in shower that I had to wash out before using was not overly nice. Good that there was EV charger but this wasn't obvious at booking which would have made a difference to my travel pre arrival meaning I wouldn't have had to sit in Lidl for 30 minutes.

Lovely hotel. We stayed to meet with some old friends and we had a lovely evening. Service was wonderful, the hotel was clean and well-maintained. Bed was comfy and the view was lovely.

A really special find
Such a beautiful hotel with a lovely relaxed and cozy atmosphere. The staff were lovely and friendly and the food and drinks as good as it gets. Would highly recommend.

Cosy Cotswolds Hotel
Traditional with modern twists here and there that make it feel very comfortable and welcoming. Clean rooms, lovely staff. Breakfast in particular was delicious.

Nicely placed in the Cotswolds countryside, not far from Stroud and 20 mins from the National Arboretum at Westonbirt. Friendly and helpful staff, clean and comfortable. Nice views, too!

Important to say that in reception here there's a taxidemy bear who was murdered by a British imperialist soldier back in the day. Leaving that monstrosity aside, this is a lovely old coaching inn, set in the Gloucestershire countryside. If you're going out walking your dog in the daytime, great, but there's no way on earth I'd have risked walking on the roads around here outside of daylight hours. Our room was unacceptably hot. Yes, a low-powered plug-in fan was provided (I found it in a wardrobe - 'beware of the leopard') but was not up to the job. In terms of dinner - the restaurant here is very good - specifically, the cote de boeuf for 2 was excellent. Unfortunately, breakfast finished ridiculously early for a weekend - 9.30, even on Sundays! - so we didn't get to sample this, despire staying both days of the weekend. So, no judgement on what may have been on offer but the fact that it stopped unreasonably early for no good reason does count massively against this place. On our first night here (a Friday!), the bar shut unreasonably early, considering this is a pub. They prioritised random people sat in the garden compared to people paying hundreds to stay overnight. Whatever your perspective, that's poor. The cask beer is not well kept, indeed restaurant staff didn't seem to know it (cask beer) existed, nor to understand what 'not well kept' meant when another paying customer raised it. So improvements would need to be made before we'd come again.

Thank you for your review of your recent stay at the Bear.The walks on the common offer fantastic views of the surrounding countryside, but as highlighted are tricky after dark. The high temperatures experienced during the time of your stay did make it tricky to maintain a comfortable temperature in the bedrooms of the main house. The hotels grade 2 listing makes modernising the facilities in regards to air con a tricky area to develop. Apologies that the fan did not make for a more comfortable experience in the room.Thank you for your kind words regarding your experience at dinner. The advertised times for breakfast with Expedia have been amended as at the weekend service runs until 10am, apologies for the incorrect times advertised. Reception staff confirm the times and areas of breakfast usually on check in, I hope this was not over looked during your visit. The hotel bar closes at 11pm, but residents are welcome to continue relaxing in the bar until later as the night manager is available to serve into the early hours. The younger members of the foh team will be given further training on cask ales served in the bar to avoid future disappointment.Thank you once again for your feedback

The staff were efficient polite and obliging. We had an issue with electric in room and we were immediately upgraded to a superior room and given free drinks. The breakfast was superb. Very enjoyable stay

Avoided booking a compact room but even the standard is tiny and very hot and stuffy (weather was not very warm) and dirty in places. Secondary double glazing limits the chance of much fresh air. Hotel bars and garden nice. Restaurant ok but not enough staff and expensive for what you get.

Great place to stsy
Really great place to stay as a business teavel. Loads of parking , easy check-in. Good size room, evening meal price good and tasted good. Downsides, might only have been my room (No 44) but i could hear the chap next door cough up phlegm and his wee hitting the water. Also the smashed avocado breakfast was the blandest i have every had. On the flip side service was quick and friendly fruit perfect coffee fresh. I would stay again

Lovely country hotel
Wow factor hotel in the Cotswolds. Great setting. Lovely views. Nice outdoor bar and seating area. Lots of nice little rooms to sit in and chill. Fabulous food both the restaurant evening meal and breakfast. Only negative is that the mattress was a little firm for me and a summer tog duvet would be better as no air con.

Great night at the Bear
We had an overnight stay with our boys and a dog. Without asking, we were given adjoining rooms. Comfortable, clean. With a dog bed and bowls provided. Lovely smellies in the bathroom! Food was great and staff friendly.

The room was on the small side and tired. The room got rather hot when radiator came on in the night. Noise woke me up at 5am from corridor. They were packing up breakfast before end of session and people were still coming in for breakfast, not good when you pay £162 per night!! No pain au chocolate left at 9am.
