Hello Anonymous, At check-in, you are asked to read the rules and procedures on the lighted sign next to the desk, and sign in saying that you understand. On that sign, it says that dining kits are a $10 deposit. That deposit gets you a plate, bowl, cup, and utensils. When you bring them back clean at the end of your stay, you get the $10 back. As far as pots and pans, they are in the kitchen for you to use. Sorry if you misunderstood how that works. Take care!

Thank you for your feedback Alan. We're sorry to hear it wasn't to your standard. Everything gets cleaned twice a day every day, however its hard to keep it 100% clean when we occupy 50 plus people daily. We are a backpackers that mainly serve the likes of 18 to 35 year old's who do socialise, so there is a bit of noise around however we have a 'quiet after 10pm rule' that we in force every night. There are plenty of 3/4 star hotels in the area, perhaps one of those would best suit the next time you stay in Albany. Regards.

There are many original and period features which makes this a heritage listed building which can mean sometimes repairs require specialist craftsmen and certain issues cannot be addressed instantly for this we are grateful for your understanding! Rest assured all the repairs have been conducted, furthermore the hostel is so safe you can leave anything unlocked!Best wishes!

Thank-you for your review!We cannot control what people choose to eat and cook and as a result that is what you would of experienced,furthermore the guest threatened staff members & emailed the establishment again threatening with legal action.We hold all the appropriate certifications and licenses and have been always regularly inspected.Even after all this we still offered a free stay as a good will gesture and a partial refund is in progress.Would most defiantly avoid bookings from this individual.Best wishesTeam 1849!

Hello, I think it's unfair to leave a comment like this, especially anonymously so that I cannot directly address the situation. The bathrooms and kitchens are cleaned thoroughly multiple times per day. Yes, the building is 170 years old and things are due for updates in some places- but that doesn't mean they are unclean. As far as breakfast goes, it has been removed and the websites have been updated accordingly. If you booked prior to the change, there is a crossover period where some people don't get the breakfast that was previously offered. However, this is still the cheapest accommodation in Albany, and it is communal, so there are some trade-offs you must deal with as far as sharing living areas. This is a backpackers, which means it's a clean bed to sleep in, a place to take a shower, and do your own cooking. We have changed ownership, and are making improvements to the building as the previous owner focused more on free pancakes than maintaining the property. I'm sorry that you felt the need to give us a bad review. Maybe in the future you should spend a little more money and try to find accommodation at a chain hotel or bed and breakfast if you want to be pampered. Safe travels, into the future.

Hi there 'Anonymous', we are really sorry your time with us wasn't enjoyable. We do everything we can to make it so. Did you let staff know you had a problem with the room or the beds you had, these could easily have been fixed had we known? One of the ways the pages on booking engines are configured is to provide an example of each room. I think, looking at the pictures, you saw our luxury queen room but booked the standard queen accidentally. We could have assisted you with this if we'd known. Yes, it is a very old hotel with jarrah floorboards throughout. We have put rugs down to dampen footsteps but unfortunately some people are not mindful of the time of day or night they're wandering around. For this I apologise. Again, I apologise your stay with us wasn't as expected or hoped for.
