On my first night, I was convinced I’d give this place a one star review. However, as my week went by, the charm of this place grew on me, and even though I gave it three stars, my feelings about this place are greater than three stars and despite everything, I’d consider going back here if the circumstances were right.
The problem is that this is not a five star resort. It’s just not and if you have expectations of luxury like at a Hilton or Marriott, drop those expectations immediately. It’s hard to articulate how to characterize this place. It’s one of a kind and after all is said and down, I’m happy to have experienced it.
The property is beautiful like a park, but there are no luxurious pools, spas, restaurants, etc. There is however beautiful scenery, serenity, and solitude. When they’re not mowing or fixing things, the place is very quiet and very Kauai.
Our cottage was ocean front but dilapidated and dirty. It was functional but smaller than I thought it would be and very mid. I suppose, though, that it is what it is. They are, I think, old plantation cottages and perhaps they are intended to be authentic. Still, the bathrooms were uninspired (but clean), the beds uncomfortable, the sheets kind of gross. The kitchen was functional. But the view was spectacular, the surroundings surreal.
The pool is a slightly larger version of your pool in your backyard, but it’s clean and cool, and pleasant. There are no cabanas for free as I saw somewhere.
