I had to visit the IT township of Magarpatta City for a day's visit and reached Pune the previous evening.
I was on a shoe-string budget and looking up the rates as well as facilities in the hotels in Pune a couple of weeks before my visit, I found the facilities described at Phoenix were right up there with the best. But the rate was quite low. I was a bit apprehensive if the descriptions would match the reality, especially considering the low rate quoted on hotels.com (rate equivalent to low-budget hotels)
I read through other reviews and found that Phoenix is a fairly new property and I decided to take the chance and confirmed my booking. And, I should say, I was pleasantly surprised with the overall experience.
The room size was quite large with a wall-mounted big screen LCD TV and an enormous king-size bed. Even the bathroom was large in size with an inbuilt geyser. The room service for dinner was excellent and so was the quality of food - especially since I ordered close to midnight.
They even have complimentary wi-fi - a boon for business travellers.
As I entered the room, The only jarring note was the electrical master switch in the room that was not switching on even when I inserted the room card key (smart card) in the slot. I figured that it could be a loose connection somewhere and jammed a small piece of plastic behind the card when inserting. Bingo! it switched on. I had no problems after that having figured out how it worked ;-)
The room rate was inclusive of breakfast and the in-house restaurant was cozy enough with a nice breakfast spread the next morning - including a number of fresh fruits, parathas, south indian and continental choices along with milk-shakes and fresh fruit juices.
I had an early breakfast and relaxed in my room till 11 am with the day's newspaper that was delivered to the room. A relaxed shower and then watching the highlights of the world cup cricket on TV took up the next hour and I was ready to check out at 12:00 noon to leave for my destination at Magarpatta.
Overall a pleasant & value-for-money experience. The staff are courteous, efficient and unobtrusive. I would recommend this for anyone (for leisure or business) who's visiting central or eastern part of Pune (and not looking for 5-star facilities - I would rate them 3-star). Another plus is that they have a counter at the airport and all the taxi drivers know the place. So, no trouble finding the hotel in the middle of the night, even for a newbie to the city of Pune.
