Gallery hotel review
Nice to go to a hotel with character. Breakfast very good. Bed huge and comfy. Nice bathroom. I was disappointed to find staff were not very welcoming, but were pleased to help when approached. Good location near metro and nice local restaurants and bars. Fridge was moldy- needed a wipe! Nice original art deco features.

Don’t let looks fool you
Had a fantastic stay here, it’s hidden but the rooms are excellent, great space and value for money, close to train and the area is excellent, go for a walk turn right at road and walk a few hundred metres to bakery on rhs grab a coffee walk across the toad and walk amongst the area it is stunning! Highly recommend this place, it’s quirky and wel furnished , beds were comfy and the showers great! Staff were excellent and the cost of the room includes breakfast! A very nice one at that! Give this place 4.5 stars! Enjoy!

location! Clean! Friendly!
Room is huge and clean. Romantic historical building, yet well renovated. People are kind and friendly. Breakfast has a good portion and yummy! I love this hotel. will return next time!

Very nice, unique room; bath tub in a open space and shower room in a separate space. Two air conditioners and ceiling fan are working great. There are many chest of drawers. Two small bottles of water are provided everyday. Staffs in front desk can speak English and they are very kind (expect for one slender girl... ). Breakfasts are so good; A nice gentleman cooked all (Since I selected Western style, so I don't know their Chinese and Japanese style dishes). I would stay for the next if I have a chance.

Well positioned in relation to the French Concession area and Line 1. Friendly staff. Rough around the edges but very charming hotel. Rooms are large and well furnished. Great bath. Breakfast very simple and limited.

This was our second time in this hotel, and we'd return again. However, the breakfast was poorer than in the past, as there is now a dedicated breakfast room, and the food was of considerably less quality, and the wifi was very weak almost all the time, which was very frustrating at times.

Spacious and unique rooms but w poor facility
This is an interesting experience for me. When I arrived at the entrance, I thought that I was in a wrong place. I asked if I could cancel the reservation. The girls at the front desk (actually more like an one-concept regular office) explained that the rooms were spacious, with 54 square meters. Hearing that, I wanted to see a room. I was taken to the 2nd floor and to my surprise, the room shown to me was really stylish and spacious. It appeared very clean as well. At that, I decided to stay at the hotel. Two other reasons that I did not want to cancel the reservation were: 1) too late to find another place; and 2) it would be a fight with the hotel as its cancellation policy that I needed to cancel on the day before. My stay there was overall OK, but there are three things worth mentioning: 1) the hotel is very close to a huge park and Xujia Hui Center; 2) the internet was painfully slow; and 3) the breakfast was not up to the standard even though the chef was very nice. Later a friend of mine told me that the Heng Shan Road area is also well regarded in Shanghai. Overall, this is a hotel with great potential, but there are some limits. If the limitations are improved by the owner, I will definitely go back to the hotel.

Good value, nice location.
This is an older building that has been updated. Very friendly and helpful staff. Comfortable and spacious, we stayed for 8 nights. Our stay included breakfast and it was great! Good restaurants and 24/7 convenience stores in walking distance. Also the train station is 2 1/2 blocks away and you can get to many places for only 3 Yuan which is approx. 50 cents. Also bus stop only 1 block away. If you need a taxi, the hotel staff can call one for you. I would stay here again.

Avoid if it charges more than $50
Breakfast was a preset menu, small dish with no choices, they are being advertised as a luxury hotel, maybe if you compare the stables and this hotel. Luxury hotel won't offer a preset menu's with inedible eggs. There was no juice, any kind!!! Only coffee, tea or water!! Luxury.... Never again for that kind of price, feeling like I've been scammed out of $125. Better to eat breakfast somewhere else, cheaper and tastier and more choices to choose actually what one likes. Can't watch the TV because either the reception is blocked or when it is in service, the picture is so pixelated that one might get dizzy.. The only good thing in this "luxury" hotel was a big room with ample of space to almost dance. But this was overkilled by everything being old, tired and overused.

Art Deco hotel in great location
Unique hotel, not just the usual chain hotel. Staff very friendly and attentive, most spoke English. Lovely Art Deco features. Great location in the former French concession, lovely park nearby.

Disappointing and misleading
Firstly, the images in the listing are of a brand new hotel which looks amazing with a large foyer area. Entrance is through a dingy back area off the street and the foyer is not as depicted in the images. The reception area is tiny and jjust a small desk. I had booked a twin room as I was traveling with my niece. We were firstly given a large one bed room. When I asked for this to be changed, I was told this was not on my booking and there were none available. I argued that I had booked a twin room so they showed my the Expedia paperwork, which said "twin room". Suddenly a twin was available! However, although the guest rooms are large and once would have been amazing when new, but now looking run down and best a bit bumpy. The biggest issue is there is no bathroom privacy at all. Not even the toilet. Everything is in full view and there is no screen at all. Being a twin room I would thought there would have been a screen. Also this hotel way out of the way of all the great shops and restaurants in the French Concession. I had booked three nights but checked out after two. The hotel was obliged and only charged for two nights, but I need give then a days notice.

Retro room
The room is great, with an old Shanghainese feeling, very retro. However, outside the rooms, the corridor, lift and lobby are quite old and rundown. Perhaps the hotel is trying to duplicate old style feeling but being old and a bit dirty are not quite same as retro. Another thing, the English version of the hotel website should be updated as some parts are not applicable, eg, free minibar but is actually not free.

I always stay here. Excellent location. English at check-in no problem. Air conditioner is bit puzzling to operate but it works.

Decent boutique hotel
I enjoyed my stay in this boutique hotel with it's1930s decor. Room is so spacious and location is convenient to the tube station line 1 and many bars and pubs nearby. Breakfast is decent and delious. Will come back to stay again .

Spacious Boutique Hotel!
Don't be alarmed by the exterior look. This is a really nice hotel and very spacious. This is very much suitable to couples as the restroom is open concept. If you do end up there and not couples you can ask for a curtain and they would set one up. The breakfast is not Buffett style so you are better off at buying food outside for much cheaper. There is only one lady who spoke really good English the rest of them you need to pull your hair to get them to understand anything.

This hotel is amazing if you are tired of the large 4 Star or 5 Star type. It is a nice, boutique-type, romantic hotel in the French Concession area.

Very Overrated
Lobby and public areas are tired and dirty. Its a very old building. The rooms are very large. Its not a bad hotel all things considered but it is not even close to deserving 4.5 stars considering the condition of the public areas. I would consider it a three and a half star property that needs some work.

Great little boutique hotel with charm
Last minute deal brought me to the Gallery Suites on a weekend trip to Shanghai. Cozy boutique hotel located off the Hengshan Road bar strip. Have to enter a nondescript alley to get to the property which is an old building renovated to bring modern amenities to the hotel while still keeping it's old Shanghai charm. Rooms were huge, easily 50-60sqm open plan. Clean, quick service and very convenient location for visitors on a sightseeing trip.

Nothing to fault - superb!
We loved our stay here! We got a deal on the Art Deco Grand Suite (Room 301) and it was fantastic. The room is huge, has a giant, so-comfy king-size bed, a desk area, a sofa area and a spacious bathroom with a great shower as well as a tub (didn't try). Good wifi. And I just loved the decor - think dark floors and lots of Old Shanghai colours and patterns. Everything was spotless and all the staff we encountered were very professional. Out of the 4 staff we encountered at reception, only one's English was a bit poor but we got there in the end. The young gentleman that checked us in and the other one that escorted us to our room and who worked at the breakfast buffet spoke very good English. Breakfast had a good selection of Western choices as well as Chinese. It wasn't anything special, but it wasn't bad either - you'll leave fed. Good coffee! You're in the French Concession and about 7min walk from the bar area where Sasha's and Zapatas are. Our walk to Tianzifang took 30min.

Nice room and location !
We had a comfortable stay at Gallery Suites. The room was spacious and well maintained. The staff provided us a free crib for our baby. They also helped us with finding taxis. The only thing a is the building itself is old and outside the room there isn't much space..the lobby, staircase etc are small. The breakfast was also so-so. But we loved our room !!
