Thank you for taking the time to write us a review its a shame you didn't have the time to speak to us directly during your stay. I'm sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us. With regards to the location of the rooms - its a small hostel with a lot of coming and going which is expected in a hostel. With regards to the doors these are fire doors and so do close tight and each month we get them inspected and at present there is no issue with the seals, we will double check under the doors and see what we can do to reduce the light coming through though. The kitchen is located through the TV room and so the rooms are not directly next to the kitchen - If we are busy there is again a lot of coming and goings through to the kitchen we do have extractor fans and big patio doors but if we are busy then a lot of cooking can take place and being a hostel this is expected unfortunately some guests don't think to turn on the fans etc and open doors. With regards to the sheets - unfortunately I'm unable to comment as you had not addressed this to us at the time. I've checked all our linen and all is clean and there are no mould stains on any of the sheets but I can only apologise if there were any marks but I can ensure you 100% we wash all our linen! With regards to the breakfast - This is a FREE BREAKFAST and advertised as so its a gesture from us to our guests who are on tight budgets to have a good meal before they start the day! Yes we keep the bread and cereals down in reception which is only down one flight of stairs and as you said the rooms are close the kitchen so really not far to go at all! It's kept here to keep it tidy and prevent guests from spreading it around the kitchen making it difficult for guests to find the items. Thank you for taking the time to write this review. I'm very sorry that our hot water system broke but these things do happen and unfortunately I was not made aware of the issue until lunch time. When I advised you of this at lunch time you advised you noticed an issue first thing with no hot water as you assumed we only had a certain supply of hot water which is definitely not the case at all. I advised that due to the time and our plumber working on an emergency that afternoon we would not have the problem fixed until after 5-6pm. You did not express any concerns and understood that these things happen and was about to head out for the day, I offered that at any time you would like to shower then you could use the showers at Urban but our water should be back up and working by 6pm / 7pm at the latest. Later in the day you requested to move to Urban Retreat for the night and expressed no concerns regarding the room over there on check in, during your stay and on check out. I did advise the hot water would be fixed by 6pm and it was and I'm very sorry you had to move unnecessarily. The next day you had already checked out before I had a chance to contact Urban to offer a free nights stay if travelling through again. I did then email you to apologise for the inconvenience and offer a nights stay free of charge if you were to travel through Taupo again however never heard back from you. I'm sorry if maybe this email did not reach you and please if you do travel back through Taupo again then please do get in touch for a free nights accommodation :-) Apologies again.

Thank you very much for taking the time to write us a review and I apologise you found the dorm room uncomfortable we are in the process of discussing with the owner about replacing the older mattresses - had you advised us during your stay we would have moved you into another room / swapped to a newer mattress. Thank you very much for your comments and very pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay with us :-) - We have thought about individual lamps for the beds but after asking many travellers we came to a decision they are actually more of an inconvenience for others in the room if some are trying to sleep etc or if someone falls asleep with them on it can be annoying - its difficult to know whats best to do when some guests say yes and others say no :-/ Thank you again and I hope you continue to enjoy your travels around New Zealand :-)

Apologies you found the breakfast a 'joke' but considering this is a budget backpackers its not a bad deal to get a bed, free wifi and breakfast for $27. Our breakfast is a gesture to all our guests and an added bonus when booking with us! we provide white and multigrain bread, 3 types of cereal and a selection of spreads which I think is pretty substantial considering it is free!!! If you want a full english breakfast then I'm sure you can pay for this at approx $15-$20 in a local cafe. Thank you for your time in writing this review and hope you find a better 'free breakfast' elsewhere ;-)

We have night porters on site who close the communal areas by 10:30 or at the latest 11:00. Sorry you felt the wifi was poor. The wifi has been checked by the company Global Gossip who provide the network and all is working well. Unfortunately you only need a couple of guests updating / downloading large files etc to cause the speed to reduce, something unfortunately we cannot control.
