Hello Elizabeth. Good afternoon from Isla Solarte. I would like to thank you for taking the time to explain so well what you experienced during your stay here with us. Departing a location with an unsatisfied feeling can leave you very heavy hearted, and we are thankful that you're in contact with us in order to open a conversation. You mention bedbugs, the obvious nightmare of every establishment. We obviously take this matter very seriously. Therefore, we fumigate all our rooms twice every month. This means all possible creepy crawlies have no possibility to live and (more importantly) to breed. Since we started fumigating bimonthly instead of once a month, we haven't had one complaint about them since. What we do have here at Bambuda Lodge, are sandflies, in abundance unfortunately. Please do try and research what their bites look like before reading further. To an untrained eye they can get mistaken for bedbugs very easily. Sandflies are tiny little bugs that lay their eggs in still water. Because we at Bambuda Lodge are surrounded by mangroves there are many little pools of still water that they love and use. Sandflies bite during the day, but you will not notice it when they bite you.The actual itch always develops several hours to days later. If you have not heard of them or felt them before, they can be mistaken for bedbugs very easily, since you can get itchy later than the bite itself and they are most active during sunsets (like mosquitos). This specific month we have had a heavier sandfly presence than before, as it has been surprisingly rainy, even though it should have been high season (and dry season) already. We can, of course, never say with certainty that this is the creatue that bit you, but I can say that we are sure that you have also been bitten by sandflies throughout your stay. To avoid more sandflies we have a routine bio-degradable spray that you might have seen or heard being put into action. Every two days, our groundskeeper take a heavy machine that looks like a leaf blower and walks around the property at sunset. The machine blows a combination of organic (and non harmful to humans and plants) matters onto the vegetation and water pools around Bambuda grounds. This takes down the material of the sandfly eggs, so the material dries up and they do not develop to become their annoying little selves. We have searched long and hard for the right solution against the reproduction of more sandflies, because we are aware of them being extremely annoying for our guests, our staff and everyone that visits the property especially around the swimmingpool during a beautiful sunset. This measure seems to be working the best out of all. We have had other people mistake their bites for bedbugs and it is always a heavy conversation to have, because we do not want anyone thinking that we don't believe them on their word.
