We discovered two treasures in Siena: the stately hotel and its lovely caretaker, Viola. Take it from a world traveler… you will find no better value in Italy. If you can afford the top room with a full balcony over Plaza de Campo, do it. The view is extraordinary, as are the extra high ceilings, antique furniture and artwork inside.
To get here, take a cab. Only 15 euro. You can be dropped off at the courtyard in front, and when you depart, Viola will summon a cab all the way to the station in 15 minutes flat. The ride is an experience in itself, as people clear the streets with towering ancient walls rising up on both sides.
Viola gave us flawless directions to the property. As we arrived late, there was a welcome note on our door and she called, too. Being right on the Campo is amazing, although the crowds are loud and the jarring bell tower goes off every 30 minutes. There were heavy duty earplugs provided, however. I am a very light sleeper and amazingly, with those earplugs, I slept like a baby both nights.
We did a local walking tour of the city and Duomo all the way up to the top for an amazing view. We shopped at wine stores and found values that were the best we saw anywhere from Sicily to Milan. We found leather stores with deals on purses, wallets, and more. Viola recommended good restaurants within walking distance, too. The food was amazing.
