We had a singularly horrific and unsatisfying experience at the Omni Mt Washington in Bretton Woods, NH. We visited during a rainstorm for a pre-Christmas getaway, and the age of the hotel showed with trash cans in the lobby and buckets in the dining room to catch all the leaks. That is something we did not expect from a 4 star “resort.”
While leaving at 11AM, the checkout staff said, “You should hurry, we might close the property because of flooding.” When I swung the car around, it was too late. The management closed the property’s service road due to flooding. The staff told us we were stuck, likely for the night. We never received an update earlier that morning as the water slowly rose and cut off the property’s access road. That was surprising given the flurry of texts to register for activities, book restaurant reservations, etc. prior to our arrival.
With a wife and 2 boys (one age 7) and plenty to do, this news that I was stuck at the Omni with no exit predicted was disconcerting. When I asked the front desk if the Omni would comp a room for us if we had to stay another night, they said we could reserve a room (at a slight discount) or hang out in the lobby!!
I’m glad they didn’t make us sit in our car considering we were stuck because of leadership’s gross mismanagement of their own property, and lack of communication with guests as to the risks of staying for breakfast! The staff could not leave either; they were mostly preoccupied with getting off duty.
