What do you expect from a pub with rooms in a (very) small village close to nowhere in particular, but convenient to to a bike race starting in Bakewell? How about helpful and friendly staff, clean and tidy facilities and a dinner to die for. The landlord accommodated my need to have a secure place to lock my bike, and he set out a help yourself breakfast for my unreasonably early start without a complaint, and that has not been my experience elsewhere. I happened to bump into the chef in the courtyard in the late afternoon, so I took the opportunity to ask for his recommendation. "Fish & chips - the best in the village", he said. Given there was only one other place to eat in the village, I wasn't sure that was particularly special. Well, I'd say it was the best fish & chips in many, many villages, and the excellent lemon polenta cake was a bonus. Do be aware it's a proper local pub, so don't expect it to be quiet on a Friday night if you want to get your head down early. If, unlike me, you don't need an early night, then join the fun.
