Warwick

Located on the banks of the River Avon, this historic county town is famous for being home to William the Conqueror’s vast medieval castle.

Dive headlong into history in Warwick. Explore a medieval fortress built by William the Conqueror, now a family-friendly theme park-style attraction. Learn about local history in several interesting museums and get your fill of fresh air in attractive landscaped gardens and parks.

Warwick was first founded in A.D. 914 by Ethelfleda, sister of the Anglo-Saxon king Edward the Elder. Wander around the center of town to see buildings from both the medieval era, as well as 17th- and 18th-century constructions, which were built after a devastating fire swept through the town in 1694.

Amble through town in search of some of the older medieval buildings. The centuries-old Lord Leycester Hospital, formerly the Guildhall, and the cluster of timber-framed buildings around Oken’s House all predate the fire, as does the Collegiate Church of St. Mary climb 134 steps to the top of the church’s tower for fantastic views.

Warwick Castle also dates back to medieval times. The first castle incarnation was wooden and was erected in 1068 under the orders of William the Conqueror the wood was later replaced with stone. Head to the castle today to enjoy a fun day out with falconry displays, swordsmanship workshops and child-friendly guided tours.

Discover the local history at one of Warwick’s excellent museums. Go to Warwickshire Museum in the 17th-century Market Hall for an overview of the area’s history, including exhibits on the Great Fire, geology and archaeology. St. John’s House Museum offers insight into local life over the centuries. For a lesson on military history, visit the Warwickshire Yeomanry Museum.

For some fun in the open air, go to St. Nicholas Park where you can stroll along the river. Hill Close Gardens, a series of 16 Victorian gardens, is a must for gardening enthusiasts. Mingle with locals at the Warwick Racecourse, one of the oldest horse racing courses in the country.

Room was clean and functional. Bar area was small but ok as wasn’t too busy. Too many emails and texts for check in and door code wasn’t received so still had to wait at reception to get that. We were going to use the pool but at £12 per person it was not worth it - there should at least be a concession ...
