Nestled on the northern tip of the Danish Baltic island of Bornholm is Allinge, a picturesque seaside town of half-timbered houses, a long history and wild scenery. Hike across granite cliffs, unwind on a beach and explore ancient ruins and centuries-old churches.
Visit the well-preserved ruins of Hammershus Fortress, a 13th-century defensive structure perched high on a rocky plateau. Before exploring the remains of its rooms and chambers go to the old castle yard for an exhibition on the fortification's history.
Get around to some of Allinge's other historical attractions. These include the ruins of a small chapel from the Middle Ages called Solomon’s Chapel and Allinge Church which dates back to the 16th century. Among its highlights are the organ and a board in the porch that lists the names of victims of two 17th-century epidemics. Travel about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) south of Allinge to the village of Olsker for Olsker Church, a 12th-century round church.
If you are a lover of the outdoors, Allinge has great opportunities for adventures. Try rock climbing at Moseløkken Quarry and hike along rock strewn trails on the Hammerknuden, a huge granite bedrock. At the summit is Hammeren Lighthouse, an early 19th-century cylindrical granite tower that is no longer operational. There are also routes that lead to Crystal Lake, Hammersøen Lake and Opal Lake. You can also Fly above this man-made body of freshwater on the long aerial ropeway. Enjoy a coastal walk at the Sandvig Strand beach and during the summer sunbathe on its sands.
Reach Allinge by plane from Copenhagen or take a bus or train from the Danish capital to catch the high-speed ferry from Ystad, Sweden. Alternatively, rent a car and drive. Bornholm's main point of entry is Ronne, and from there it's approximately 12.5 miles (20 kilometers) to the rugged coastal scenery and fascinating history of Allinge.
