The center of Bardejov is one big historical attraction, filled with old buildings and fascinating museums, all encircled by stone walls. Stroll the cobbled streets of this fortified medieval town, past merchants’ houses and Gothic churches.
Bardejov dates back to at least 1241 when it first appeared in written records. The settlement flourished in the 15th century, when its strategic position near European trade routes helped drive its growth. Many of the town’s well-preserved buildings date back to this time.
Go to the spacious Bardejov Square, where some of the town's key attractions are clustered. Occupying the center of the plaza is the old town hall, a beautiful Renaissance building. It houses part of the Šariš Museum, one of the oldest museums in Slovakia. Stop by to browse displays dedicated to the medieval history of the area.
In the northern part of the square lies the 15th-century Church of St. Aegidius, a Gothic basilica with a narrow pointed roof and spire. Marvel at the artistry of the detailed interior, which features carved iconography and ornate altars. Take a short drive out of the center to find the Spa of Bardejov. Pamper yourself in the natural mineral waters, which once attracted Russian tsars and Austrian princesses. After your soothing moments, tour the nearby Museum of Folk Architecture. This open-air museum features several 19th- and 20th-century buildings.
