Top Central California Hotel Reviews
Portola Hotel & Spa at Monterey Bay
8/10 Good
"The lobby is beautiful, inviting, and exceptionally well maintained. The outdoor lounge area with the fireplace was also a highlight and a great place to relax and unwind. The location is the hotel’s strongest feature. It’s perfect for exploring Old Monterey, with Fisherman’s Wharf just steps away and Cannery Row within walking distance. There are also many nearby restaurants, cafés, and bakeries, making it easy to enjoy coffee, pastries, or a meal without needing to drive. The room was clean, comfortable, and well maintained. However, the front desk staff did not provide a warm or welcoming experience during either check-in or check-out. Since these moments shape a guest’s first and last impression, a friendlier and more engaging approach would significantly improve the overall experience. The shower had low water pressure, and the temperature was difficult to regulate, which made for a less comfortable experience. The $30 parking fee (including taxes) feels quite expensive, especially for multi-night stays. It would also be helpful to provide clearer parking instructions before arrival, as the structure is not very intuitive. At check-in, guests should be informed about what to do if the garage is full and how to return the parking key at check-out. Unfortunately, this information was not provided. I had to step out of the car to ask for assistance while my husband waited inside, but clearer communication would have made both arrival and departure much smoother."

"We had such a great time. It is a bird sanctuary so a lot of bird poop outside."
The Monterey Hotel
10/10 Excellent
"We just had one night driving through, and this was a good choice for where to stay. Very convenient to the wharf and shops downtown. The room was bigger than I had anticipated and had a working fireplace. We left early the next day so we were able to take advantage of free street parking that runs from 6 pm to 9 am. There is also a free or discounted lot nearby the staff can direct you to, you don't have to valet."
