- Flying can be a great experience if you carry the right stuff. First of all you'll need basic toiletry items, such as deodorant and a toothbrush, a spare change of clothes and a few magazines. Next, leave space in your carry-on bag for your phone, tablet and chargers, your medications and maybe a cozy neck pillow as well. Lastly, be sure to bring your passport, travel documents and some money.
Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:
- Leave all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hairspray in your checked luggage. Any gels or liquids in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) will be confiscated. Sharp or pointed objects, like your beloved Swiss Army knife, and dangerous goods which are explosive or flammable, such as aerosol cans, spray paint and fireworks, are also not allowed.
What to wear on a flight:
- The long, narrow aisles of an airplane are not the place for a fashion parade. Layer up with comfy clothing and remember to take a sweater as the temperature can drop inside the cabin on long-haul flights. Slightly roomy, flat shoes are also recommended.
- Unfortunately, a risk of long-distance flying is developing DVT (deep vein thrombosis), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity. To prevent this, take every opportunity to wander around the cabin. Compression socks and tights are another simple way to help minimize this risk.
