One of Romania’s most ancient churches features well-preserved frescoes, relics of worship and architectural styles that combine local and Byzantine motifs.

As one of Romania’s oldest churches, the Cozia Monastery is regarded as a national treasure. Admire its spectacular architecture, which combines Byzantine motifs with attractive local influences. Take a guided tour to learn about the church’s colorful history.

The Cozia Monastery dates back as far as the 14th century, when it was built under the rule of Mircea the Elder. Notice the fertile surroundings of the location. Its original name, which meant “walnut grove,” referred to the walnut plantation on which it was built.

As you approach, you’ll see how the front veranda, adorned with archways and copper-tinged domes above, makes for a striking first impression. Inspect the façade, which has walls decorated with attractive stone rosettes and horizontal brickwork.

Inside the Great Church, in the nave, there are ancient frescoes that date back over 600 years. See portraits of important regional characters including Șerban Cantacuzino and enjoy the gentle hues of stained-glass windows. Stop at the catacombs, which includes the tomb of Mircea the Elder.

Two chapels were added to the complex by later rulers of the area. Explore a brick 16th-century chapel and admire its reflection in the Olt River. The other chapel dates back to the 18th century and features two beautiful vaulted houses.

Opposite the church, visit the infirmary, the bolnita, a 16th-century hospital that is decorated with beautiful portraits of Mircea cel Bătrân and his sons. Next door, browse the Mircea Museum and see exhibits of old art, relics of worship, coins and manuscripts.

Stop at the old Cozia, which marks the spot where the ruins of an even earlier church lie. For a great experience of the monastery, view it from the Olt River on a slow boat cruise.

The Cozia Monastery is located on the banks of the Olt River, about 12 miles (20 kilometers) north from Râmnicu Vâlcea. Drive here in about 30 minutes. The church is open daily and is free to enter.
