Fall weekend trip
We really enjoyed our stay at this quaint, warm and welcoming place. The room was large and filled with antiques. We could see the river from our room. The service was excellent! We had a nice dinner one evening and a wonderful breakfast on Sunday. The sack breakfast on Saturday was perfect to take with us and start our day enjoying the beautiful fall day and National Forest. If you're coming from the city, keep in mind this is a rural area - not many gas stations or grocery stores, but if you love nature, this area can't be beat. The mansion has a great selection of wine so grab a bottle and have a picnic. The hosts will be happy to help you plan your day! Wonderful stay!!

Golconda Mansion House
Golconda Mansion House was amazing! Cool, huge old Victorian house right by the Ohio River that was beautifully decorated. Many different kinds of wine and beer. The host was extremely friendly and helpful. Will definitely be back.

This was by far the most extreme case of false advertising I’ve ever experienced. The property is a cluttered mess both inside and out. Not advertised was that four children live at this property and can be heard and seen throughout your stay. We were advised when we checked in that the kids should be quieting down around the same time as we are going to bed. The walls are so thin that in our bedroom we could hear the children talking and guests checking in and the hosts talking and people in the hallway outside the bedrooms and people coming in and out of the front door. There is no hope for a “romantic getaway“. Our room had only a tub (no shower) which was still wet when we got there and had a clump of hair in it. It appears that nothing has been updated in this house for at least 40 years. Old, grimy bathrooms. The interior of the house appeared dirty, the rugs appeared filthy and old, and they may not have been filthy but it was impossible to tell because everything is so worn. My husband and I left shortly after checking in and did not end up staying there. We did not receive a refund of our $262 that we paid to stay in a quaint historic mansion that somehow had great reviews ????

Oh Jana. Let me count the ways.Firstly, we're very disappointed you had an unfortunate first impression of our award winning, historic hotel.Without notice, you arrived – and we allowed you to check in 3 hours early. Perhaps that was our fault. We were absolutely still ameliorating the hotel from a busy previous night. The Riverview Mansion Hotel is a Victorian gem nestled in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest. It's a classic boutique destination which has been in business for a century. It has undergone extensive renovations and upgrades. New roof, all new windows, new electric and plumbing, all new HVAC, even new rugs and fixtures. It also boasts period accurate antique furnishings. Perhaps not everyone's taste. It is also our home, we're blessed to say. I don't know how you did not gather that, as we've been in business for over a decade and have (as you rightly point out) hundreds of positive reviews. As one would imagine during mid day, there is lots of activity going on. By early evening, we boast quite a cozy and relaxed ambiance. You should have stuck around!“false advertising...” We literally have thousands of pictures online.“paper thin walls…” This brick mansion even has mostly brick interior walls.“no shower in the room...” The room you booked online clearly states a jet tub.“water in the tub...” LOL you checked in so early, it didn't have time to dry.Now let’s mention what you did seem to enjoy…. You had time to drink the complimentary bottled water, wine and chocolates. You also used the bed and the hand towels. You used the bar of soap and threw the trash In garbage. Did you enjoy the jet tub, as well?!? Of course we have to clean up the entire room after your short stay. Here's to seasoned travelers who take the time to research. And to those who can roll with the punches and appreciate the eclectic. Here's to a real Americana experience in the heartland.Beth

A wonderful opportunity to experience an historic, old home. Mansions like these, if still standing, are rarely available to the public. If you love old homes, and appreciate those who are working hard to keep them standing, you should visit and enjoy a nice stay. The mansion has interesting rooms to explore and a great place to stay while becoming familiar with this beautiful region.

This property was definitely unique, if you're into unique. The carpets were dirty, air conditioner was turned off to conserve energy and only turned on when we arrived. The continental breakfast was white bread sitting on a plate getting dried out from 8-10 am. Extremely overpriced for the amenities.

Sorry you had an unfortunate stay. We take these matters very seriously and will make appropriate corrections. We always provide a hot continental breakfast. Not sure why, but you mustn't have seen the crock full of eggs and cheese? Which is the only reason we had the "white bread" to make sandwiches. Thank you for your feedback, we will also consider how to make sure this scenario does not repeat. Best

Worth Every Penny
We spend a night at the Riverview Mansion on 08/12/2018, heading down the road to Shawnee National Forest. The mansion itself, and all the surroundings are truly amazing. It is old enough to feel the postbellum atmosphere and has all the necessary modern appliances. It reminds me of the Dacota Building in NYC, as it was portrayed in Jack Finney's "Time and again". Some fellow travelers were reporting that there are many imperfections in the interior — come on! For such a building, the imperfections are the intangible part of an image, and I don't mind to pay for it. I especially want to express my gratitude to the management. The owners and their entire family are great, hard-working people. Hope to be your guest again.

Will definitely be back!
This place is amazing! Beautifully decorated, charming and even a little funky! I came down from a suburb of Chicago and stayed in the Gilbert room for 3 nights on my own little mommy getaway. The room was huge, had a great view of the river and the bed was incredibly comfortable. I was the only one staying the days I was there and they still went out of their way to put out a nice continental breakfast every day. This was EXACTLY the trip I needed! Days filled with hiking on the breathtaking trails in the Shawnee National Forest and coming back here to quiet and relaxing nights! Unfortunately my stay was Mon-Thurs, so the lounge was not open, but Tony opened the door for me to show me and it is super cool! Since no one else was staying there at this time, he also let me peek into the other rooms, which were all equally amazing. I have family in AL and this is almost an exact halfway point. I'm hoping to set up a full family vacation in the future. At the very least, I will DEFINITELY be back with my boyfriend!

Very nice people but a more disappointing experience I cannot imagine. We paid $347.60, including a not previously shown $49 "property fee" for 3 nights, to include a free breakfast. The more notable low points: while using my laptop in bed the first night a cockroach crawled across the screen. There was a live bug in the bath tub. Dead bugs on the floor under the bed. Owner's comment was "this is southern Illinois". First day breakfast was a nondescript potato and ham casserole, cartons of yogurt, tiny oranges and lukewarm coffee with only powdered creamer and sweeteners-no juice or toast or anything else. Second day was dry biscuits and sausage gravy, same coffee and yogurt. No butter, no jam, no juice. Third day I drove 30 miles to find a McDonalds. Had pizza one evening. Surprisingly it was really good. Theres's no parking except on the street in front of the place, room for maybe 5 vehicles. Unhappily the proprietors parked their pickup truck and golf cart directly in front of the place, taking up most of the spaces. Seems like a really bad choice to me. Companions with whom we traveled also had bugs in their rooms.

Thank you for your feedback. We promise to continue improving our service and amenities. We sincerely apologize and regret your experience. If we are told about unpleasant issues during your stay we can often remedy. The website on which you booked clearly states, however that there is a $49 'cleaning fee' and there is a 'free continental breakfast.' We are not a B&B and do not claim to be. Occasionally folks looking for that are displeased when they arrive. Proper prior research, especially when booking a boutique experience, goes a long way. We have an onsite lounge and restaurant. Very unique and fun if that's what you're looking for. We have a world class wine shop featuring the best of the midwest, and a local craft beer selection second to none. We are located in the middle of nowhere; to some that's part of the charm. If you're looking for a McDonalds, however, not so much. Bugs (never heard this before)? Not sure what to make of that other than to remind you that you were staying in the middle of the Shawnee National Forest, next to the banks of the Ohio in Springtime. We do our best to regularly and organically combat this issue. This old house has been a hotel for almost a century. It's been called a mansion since Victorian times and a river-view since before the levee was built. There's only ever been 'street parking' since days of horse and carriage.Tradition has its good and bad aspects... We are regularly complemented on our breakfast and told we have THE BEST coffee! "Little oranges" btw, are called mandarins.
