Mexican Riviera, Mexico hotel rooms at the Independent

"We heard so much about Riu hotels and were so excited to try it out. We booked this trip to celebrate our ten year wedding anniversary and my husband's birthday. What a disappointment. When we arrived we didn't even receive a hello or a welcome or directions on where to go. We didn't receive a welcome drink. Our check in person was very rude and not accommodating at all. Our room was difficult to find and there was no luggage assistance. The room was dirty with stains on the curtains and walls. The website said that we could book a Riu wedding/vow renewal, we asked about it and the staff was very rude about it and basically said that they didn't offer weddings or vow renewals. So we didn't get to renew our vows for our 10 year wedding anniversary. However, I will say the hotel did provide us with a complimentary bottle of champagne. That was nice. The food wasn't the best. It was editable and with the buffet we found a lot of options but the a la cart restaurants were subpar. For a "party" resort, the parties were definitely lacking. The only party is at the adults only pool party. The entertainment was okay but it could've been better. The best shows were the Rock show and the Mexican day show. Saul and Pedro from Pacha Nightclub were absolutely AMAZING & super nice. Overall for my first experience at Riu it was very underwhelming and disappointing. Overall rating 2.3/5"

"When checking in be patient as there are slow, be aware that their beds are not the most comfortable, their matresses are too soft and seem to need new ones, also we were not able to figure out how their tv system works, it was difficult and confusing. The room was noisy. "

"The amenities would have gotten higher marks except that our favorite pool (Pool 40 next to Tazuna) was closed, along with pool 26, both closed for the entire month of May. The Fun Lab was also closed but we didn't have any teens with us so that didn't bother us, but I would have been disappointed had I planned on using that. On the plus side, we learned that we like Pool 17 and despite 2 of the pools being closed, Pool 17, the Main Pool and the SKy Pool were not overly crowded. The staff were very attentive and wonderful. Shout out to the amazing server extraordinaire: Roberto! He was fantastic. In general, staff would also have gotten higher marks if they had been trained on how to handle an extremely inebriated guest poolside. Instead, we watched a passed out guest on a lounge chair and on the ground wollow for hours as he dry heaved semi-consciously while staff figured out what to do. It was sad to watch his 3 children cry, his wife kick him trying to wake him up, and the general confusion about how to deal with it all by the staff. The wife refused medical help. It was a "buzz Kill" for us watching and I wish the staff could have removed him from the area much earlier. They did finally wheel him out. There should be staff proticol to deal with this sort of thing. We have been to this resort many times and never witnessed such an event. Overall, the food was excellent and the drinks were cold. Plus, the view can't be beat and rooms were quiet."

Major issues included: * No hot water in the room, requiring a room change * Other guests experiencing the same hot water issue * Ongoing construction and noise disruptions not disclosed in advance * Strong varnish/paint fumes from nearby maintenance work * Management promised to pause the work due to a pregnancy but did not follow through * Requested room arrangements (connecting rooms and ocean view) not provided * Main breakfast restaurant closed without prior notice We raised these concerns multiple times during the stay, but no meaningful resolution or compensation was offered. Overall, the services provided were materially different from what was represented at booking, especially considering the premium price point."
