  • A recently restored battery demonstrates how Fort Shirley protected Prince Rupert Bay, the best anchorage on Dominica. The bay itself has a long history. In 1493 one of Columbus' ships entered the bay, and by 1535 the Spanish made it station along their official treasure ship route. Check out the map to see how the fort sits on a volcanic headland, strategically overlooking the bay. Construction of the fort began in 1765 after France ceded Dominica to the British at the Treaty of Paris. The French won it back in 1778, only to cede it again five years later at the Treaty of Versailles. At it's height the fort housed over 600 men, but in 1854 it was finally abandoned as the British and French made up. Today the fort is a public park open for all to visit. Extremely polite welcome at reception, the guy who helped with luggage “wolf man” gave great advice on local food to try / order. All amenities included, cottages slightly dated if I were to be picky but didn’t hinder the stay at all. Cool aircon, comfy bed, and a clean cottage on the beach front.

Would stay again.

It is a cool place if you know what expect. The staff is very nice. The room only had a/c in the bedroom, and the ceiling fan didn't work in the living area. They did bring us a plug in fan. The restaurant and bar closes very early, so pepare. I do recommend the omelettes in the morning.

Excellent beach option in Dominica.

Very nice stay. Our original room had a broken refrigerator and we were offered a free upgrade since there was another cottage available. The restaurant is good and the prices very acceptable. Also to be noted that the cottages are equipped with a kitchen and there are grocery stores within walking distance if you prefer to self cater.

The location of this property is perfect ! The beach and the views are excellent!!! However the property is badly in need of renovation. It is dated and the amenities are not up to par and certainly do not commensurate with the price you pay. The restaurant is over priced and the food is not great. The staff do a good job of keeping the cottages clean. The cottages should be marketed as very rustic instead of deluxe as they currently sold online. We enjoyed our stay but mainly because of the beach and the location

No breakfast. No services at all. No hot water. Barely any running water. Hot staff charged large margins over what the tour guides charge directly. Staff are friendly but the experience is very poor value. Prices are 10x what they should be. It is a 1 star hostel in reality.

Clean cute cottage with beautuful landscaping. Your restaurant was advertised as open for dinner. We learned it was only open 7 am until 3. The staff, especially Ron, were kind, friendly and knowledgeable. We had a very pleasant stay, thank you!

I was under the impression that I paid the hotel through you guys when I initially made the reservation. I was disappointed that I had to pay again. I was told that the only fee that was tacked on my credit card was Travelocity's commission and that I needed to use my credit card again. I never had to do this when I used you guys before.

This is a fantastic place. The cottages are spacious and very comfortable. Everything is very clean and staff are extremely friendly. There is a restaurant /bar next door (best to check closing times) and bars/restaurants nearby. The beach is black volcanic sand and sea is a little pebbled on entry but I cannot fault the cottages at all. We had a wonderful stay.
