  • A recently restored battery demonstrates how Fort Shirley protected Prince Rupert Bay, the best anchorage on Dominica. The bay itself has a long history. In 1493 one of Columbus' ships entered the bay, and by 1535 the Spanish made it station along their official treasure ship route. Check out the map to see how the fort sits on a volcanic headland, strategically overlooking the bay. Construction of the fort began in 1765 after France ceded Dominica to the British at the Treaty of Paris. The French won it back in 1778, only to cede it again five years later at the Treaty of Versailles. At it's height the fort housed over 600 men, but in 1854 it was finally abandoned as the British and French made up. Today the fort is a public park open for all to visit. Restaurant onsite is closed for repairs. The staff is great. The rooms are basic but the AC is wonderful. The fridge is a great perk.

I booked this trip for my clode friend. She was extremely disapoibted because the A/C didnt work and she spoke with the front desk more than once on the issue. Additionally during her stay housekeeping never changed the linens..she did not enjoy her stay at all. It was very uncomfortable

Hôtel situé directement sur la plage dans le nord-ouest de l’île, au nord de la capitale Roseau. Le ratio qualité/prix de cet hôtel est excellent. Aucun restaurant sur place, mais des restaurants sont à distance de marche de l’hôtel.

Dominica is beautiful. The staff was incredibly nice and very helpful. The on site restaurant is outstanding. The air conditioning broke. The microwave didn’t work. They charged me twice for the room, I called, they processed a refund AND THEN REVERSED THE REFUND for the second charge, so that’s become a thing. All this adds up to one of the better places to stay on the island.

The property is very outdated. The rooms are not up to standard for the price being paid. The hotel only provides a bath soap ( no shampoo, conditioner and cream) My wife and son stayed with me, but only received two bath towels- requested an additional towel-this was never received Stayed two nights and room was never serviced while there. Will not be staying there again.

Hôtel simple mais très propre et confortable. La plage de sable noire qui borde l'hôtel est tout simplement magique!!!! Le restaurant propose des plats délicieux. Tout le personnel est accueillant et d'une grande gentillesse. Je recommande vivement cet établissement !

Ce qui est unique avec cet établissement c'est sa localisation, en bord de mer avec excellente vue sur le point touristique "Cabrits". Par contre établissement vieillissant pour le prix; système d'eau chaude à revoir car ou l'eau est brulante ou elle est gelée; la propreté est à revoir; toujours pas de TV...

It's really basic. I had a unique misunderstanding with the staff (who was on her first day) that meant I spent a very uncomfortable night without air-conditioning, but that wasn't something I could blame her for really. Nevertheless, there was a real problem with mosquitoes. Room was quite bright when lit but gives the impression of student dormitories. Portsmouth itself isn't much fun, especially now that the Ross School of Medicine has moved away to Barbados.
