Enjoy easy access to Mount Kineo and endless outdoor entertainment in this small village located on the western shore of Moosehead Lake.

With Rockwood as a base, discover the wild beauty of Moosehead Lake. Choose from a plethora of outdoor activities, from hiking and biking in summer to skiing down the slopes of nearby mountains in winter.

Rookwood dominates the western shore of Moosehead Lake, one of Maine’s biggest lakes. Situated on a craggy peninsula on the lake, Mount Kineo is only accessible only by water and features 700-foot (213-meter) high cliffs. Climb to the top of Mount Kineo for fantastic views of the lake. To get here from the mainland, use the public boat launch at Rockwood.

Trek along the hiking trails on Mount Kineo. All routes lead to the mountain’s summit, but offer different scenery and vary in difficulty level. The Indian Trail is the shortest but also the steepest and offers stunning views, while the Bridle Trail is the easiest. At just over 4 miles (6 kilometers), the North Trail is the longest.

Cast your line into Moosehead Lake and try to catch salmon and brook trout, among other species. Moose River, meanwhile, is the go-to spot for fly fishers. Rent a canoe or kayak and paddle downstream. In summer, go tubing or swimming.

Don’t let winter weather stop you from having fun. Go snowshoeing and cross-country skiing through the wilderness, or hit the slopes at nearby Squaw Mountain for downhill thrills. Try out snowmobiling or ice fishing on Moosehead Lake.

As you explore Rockwood and the surrounding regions, be ready to spot local wildlife. Bears, eagles, deer and, of course, moose all roam here. May and June are the best months to visit for moose sightings.

When you need a break from the great outdoors, Rockwood has all the basic amenities you might need, from small shops and restaurants serving hearty meals to friendly accommodations. Make this lakeside town your base for a trip out into Maine’s wild outdoors.
