  • During World War 2, the Japanese used Allied prisoners of war to build a railway from Thailand to Burma so they could supply their army without the dangers of sending supplies by sea. Many prisoners died under appalling conditions during its construction, and the line became known as the 'Death Railway'. It was immortalised in David Lean's 1957 film 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' which centres around one of the line's main engineering feats, the bridge across the Kwae Yai river just north of Kanchanaburi. Although the film was shot in Sri Lanka, the Bridge on the River Kwai really exists, and still carries regular passenger trains from Bangkok as far as Nam Tok. For anyone interested in 20th century history, a visit to Kanchanaburi and the infamous Death Railway is a must. This page gives all the necessary information for train travel from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi, the Bridge on the River Kwai & Nam Tok, along with an overview of what there is to see in the area, including the Bridge Over the River Kwai, the Wampo (Wang Po) Viaduct and the museum at Hellfire Pass (Konyu Cutting). You can see the Bridge on the River Kwai as a day trip from Bangkok using the morning train out and afternoon train back, but it's better to make it a 2 or 3 day trip as there's a lot more to see than just the Bridge. For example, you could take the morning passenger train from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi on day 1, stay a night or two in Kanchanaburi, then take the afternoon train back on day 2 or 3, so you can visit Hellfire Pass (less well known than the Bridge, but not be missed) and travel the Death Railway through fantastic scenery over the dramatic Wampo Viaduct as far as its current terminus at Nam Tok.

This is a beautiful place to stay. The room we had was storybook beautiful. A majestic canopy bed surrounded by hand carved furniture that made the space feel so elegant. The balcony was a personal favorite after watching the elephants across the River. A totally wonderful experience. I highly recommend

Wir hatten aufgrund der letzten Rezensionen gebucht. Nur hatte unser Aufenthalt nur wenig von den geschilderten Erfahrungen. Die Anlage liegt zwar idyllisch in einem großen schönen Areal mit vielen tropischen Pflanzen. Aber alles ist schon in die Jahre gekommen. So auch unser Bungalow. Zwar sehr sauber, aber sehr spartanisch eingerichtet. Wäre noch alles ok gewesen, wenn das Frühstück nicht sehr einfach gewesen wäre. Kein wirkliches Buffet und dann wird man nur gefragt, welche Art von Eier man haben möchte. Die kamen mit etwas Schinken und Würstchen. Das wars. Dazu gabs zwei Sorten Früchte zur Auswahl. Kaffee nur aufgebrüht in Kannen. Espresso musste mit 50 Baht extra bezahlt werden und schmeckte uns überhaupt nicht. Am zweiten Morgen haben wir außerhalb gefrühstückt. Schade, denn wir hatten in der gleichen Region zum gleichen Preis schon wesentlich Besseres erlebt.

Un vrais paradis tropical. Cependant, il faudrait que les jours de fermeture du restaurant soient indiqués car il n'y a aucun restaurant à 20kms alentours. L'hôtel affiche fièrement le TPE carte bancaire, mais celui-ci ne l'accepte pas et ne parle pas anglais, pas très pratique pour les touristes.

Rooms for improvements

We were in the family villa. Overall I would like to give 3.5 stars. Overall, the resort is nicely arranged. As another review said, the hotel is across the elephant heaven, so you get to see some elephants playing around in the morning at the breakfast area. We met the owner at the cafeteria. The service was great. The breakfast was ok. There wasn't as much variety as the Ananta River Hills (but this place is twice as big). There was a little special snack (ka-nom-tien) on our second day and it was great, we appreciated that.. The room itself is very nicely decorated. It was just that 1) there were bugs and ants in the room; 2) the inside unit of the AC is a little loud; and 3) the room and the bathroom were not totally well maintained, e.g., it was a very slow drain there were holes in the wall
