Enjoy a relaxing and scenic vacation visiting parks, museums and a zoo in this historic port town on the Delmarva Peninsula.

Salisbury is the commercial hub of the Delmarva Peninsula on the east coast of the U.S. Visit its many parks, museums, a university, a zoo and a thriving port that dates back to the 1700s.

Make your way to the Pemberton Historical Park west of the city. It contains 262 acres (106 hectares) of scenic parkland, nature trails and historical monuments. Hike through 4.5 miles (7.2 kilometers) of picturesque paths around a blend of well-kept gardens and wild flora and ecosystems. Stroll past lakes, wetlands, meadows and forests. Tour Pemberton Hall, a restored 18th-century mansion and plantation, with a guide on summer Sundays.

Explore Poplar Hill Mansion, a museum in a house from the early 1800s. Learn about its history, which involves slavery and numerous aristocratic families. Its white wooden façade has many windows surrounded by green shutters. Take a tour of the grandiose historic building. Browse works of art that line the walls. Appreciate the tranquil ambience in this quiet area of town.

Take the kids to the Salisbury Zoo and join a guided tour to learn in detail about the varied animals. Talk to a multicolored parrot and wave at an Andean bear. Get close to a fearsome alligator or a majestic jaguar. Marvel at the ocelots, spider monkeys and red wolves. Walk around the picturesque grounds and enjoy views of Beaver Dam Creek. You’ll find a playground and many picnic tables scattered around the zoo.

See the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art, which has one of the world’s largest assortment of wildfowl carvings, including realistic sculptures of ducks and eagles. Stroll through the scenic grounds on a lake.

The nearest large city to Salisbury is Baltimore, which lies about 110 miles (177 kilometers) northwest.October is a particularly good time to visit Salisbury when Pemberton Historical Park hosts two of the city’s major events. Sample dozens of craft beers as you enjoy live music and home brewing demonstrations at the Good Beer Festival. Wine lovers are catered to on another weekend during the Autumn Wine Festival.
