"Just before our stay we got a message from Dubois Chicago saying that they would not send the code to enter the property unless we sent them a security deposit almost twice as large as the room charge. They also said it couldn't be put on our credit card but had to be sent via Zelle or Venmo directly from a bank account. I messaged them and said I was not comfortable doing that and that I would only pay through my credit card. They again said they could only accept Zelle or Venmo.
That's a good way to lose your money, so I contacted Hotels.com, through whom we booked the stay, and asked for the stay to be canceled. They agreed, but it took 45 minutes on the phone--while I was on vacation. They also declined to compensate me in any way despite the fact my family and I now had nowhere to stay in Chicago on a Friday night.
Family members found reports of this happening before. So why does Hotels.com continue to do business with Dubois Chicago?"
