Torre Marrana

Torre Marrana
Inspect the vestiges of this important medieval watch tower and attend a musical or dramatic show at the adjacent theater.

The Torre Marrana is a fascinating tower from the Capo Vaticano military fortifications dating back to the 14th century. It comprises the ruins of an old lookout tower perched on a mossy hill above an outdoor theater. Enjoy the serene atmosphere and excellent views of the fields of Ricadi from this viewing platform.

Climb into the small cave in the stone base that protrudes from the bottom of the tower. Bring your binoculars for the best views of the area and spot the Tyrrhenian Sea on the western horizon. You can also see the other defensive towers of Ruffa and S. Maria, since these were part of a linked chain. In earlier times, the towers used fire signals to alert of any attacks.

Inspect the fascinating remnants of the limestone tower that has survived centuries on this location. Note that the structure was initially built to stave off any Saracen invasions.

Cross the small road to the elegant outdoor theater that is built into the hillside. Sit on the white, curved steps and enjoy a picnic in view of the sea. Regular musical concerts, dramatic performances and festivals are held in this historic spot in the evenings. Capture photos of the tower rising above the theater, with a backdrop of the setting sun.

Visit the tower and the theater, which are free and open for viewing at all times. Tickets for independent performances at the theater may incur a fee.

The Torre Marrana is in the San Nicolò part of Ricadi, near Capo Vaticano that juts out from western Italy. Arrive at the Ricadi Railway Station and walk northeast uphill for 1.4 miles (2.3 kilometers) to reach the tower in about 35 minutes. Plan to see nearby attractions, such as Praia Focu Beach and Grotticelle Beach.
