Trencin Castle Tours

Trencin Castle
Explore the art galleries, barracks, palaces and towers and look into the mythical well of this hilltop castle that has a history dating back to the 11th century.

Trenčín Castle (Trenčíansky hrad) is among Slovakia’s most striking fortresses. This medieval landmark stands atop a rocky outcrop and is shrouded in aristocratic history and legends. Visit Trenčín Castle to learn about its role as a protector of ancient merchant routes between the Baltics and the Mediterranean regions. Browse exhibitions of the Trenčín Museum, enjoy sweeping panoramas and watch battle reenactments.

You can investigate the complex’s lower area on a self-guided tour. The Lower Courtyard affords magnificent views over Trenčín’s rooftops and across the fertile plains of the Váh River Valley. See the 16th-century barracks built by the noble Zápoyla family and the Romanesque-style Matthew’s Tower, which is the oldest building within the complex. Find examples of medieval torture devices in the dungeon.

Peer down the 262-feet (80-meter) deep Well of Love. Legend states that Štefan Zápoyla kidnapped the Turkish princess Fatima and demanded that her prince, Omar, dig the well in order to set her free. Omar dug for 3 years before eventually extracting water.

Join a guided tour of the three palaces set on the complex’s acropolis, which house exhibitions of the Trenčín Museum. Peruse examples of period furniture in Louis’ Palace. Portraits of the Illésházy family, a Renaissance painting of Captain Ján Krušič and a portrait of the saintly aristocrat Zsófia Bosnyák decorate the walls of the Zápoyla’s Palace. Admire Gothic frescoes in the Barbora’s Palace.

Reach the castle via a short and pleasant uphill walk from Trenčín’s city center. The pathway presents glimpses of the castle’s colossal size to one side and city views to the other. From Trenčín’s train station it’s about 15 minutes on foot.

Trenčín Castle is open from Tuesday to Sunday and there’s an admission fee. Fees vary depending on how much of the complex you wish to visit. Guided tours in English should be booked in advance. Ask about special events such as recreations of medieval activities by costumed actors and summer nighttime tours by torchlight.
