Wailevu West, Northern Division hotel rooms at the Independent

"Stayed in the Obana, which as explained is TINY. But as solo traveler it was fine. I spent most of my time on the porch and loved that there was a fan and sun shades on 3 sides which I used to block the monsoon rains and still allowed me to be on the porch. The little bungalow was very clean. The beach is not a sandy paradise, not great for swimming but you can walk down the beach to the lagoon. I spent my time scuba diving, I didn’t need much more water time.I rarely to never watch Television, but I was so happy there was Netflix when absolutely poured rain all day and night. I used one the bikes, it definitely needs some love, but is basically worked. The grounds very well maintained and lovely. The staff very pleasant and very responsive to any needs. It’s bit far from town but enjoyed taking the local bus. The taxi driver, Bablu the hotel uses is a gem. He was so helpful. He saved the day for me when I was having great difficulty reaching someone on the island"

"The staff were lovely and very helpful. But the room was very old and run down. The bed was so uncomfortable I kept walking in pain and woke up very sore and with back and neck pain. The pillows were so old they were unusable and flared my allergies. The beds and bedding should be replaced."

"Ocean view. Old unmaintained room. Grotty -like it has not been cleaned properly for years. Outdoor shower hot water intermittent, the rocks for shower wall were black and slimy. Small maintenance issues not attended to and now bigger issues, rotting timber in wet areas. The Pathways very uneven , not safe for older patrons- sever falls risk. The pool was cloudy, and also showed the same lack of maintenance. Surrounding furniture old and shabby. Sun lounge cushions left out in the weather had black mould discussing. Cockroaches had infiltrated the communal book shelf on the main restaurant area, poop all over the shelving and the books falling apart at the spines from roach infiltration. I could go on and on….. Was not relaxing and did not reflect internet photos. Clearly we did not persevere "

"You always dream of a place like this! This was by far our best vacation! This island set the bar so high that we feel no other vacations will live up to it. The staff was amazing and the food was wonderful! Drinking kava every evening with the crew and sharing stories was magical. The owners gave us a personalized tour of Labasa and meeting the people was amazing. If you enjoy scuba, diving and or snorkeling, every place we went was amazing. A big thank you to all!"
