Definitely get a guided tour. Although you pay a lot more, without the historical context you could miss a lot. We used Nhue Concierge guided tour.

Guided tour was great but long with three hours of non-stop walking.
Send the 15 euros and explore the palaces, they are absolutely incredible. The free areas are also a great spot to spend an afternoon relaxing
Amazing place had a tour with Senne he was fantastic very knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
Go early before it gets hot.
Allow yourself at least 3 hours if you are in good health to walk 3-4 miles in a stretch. Older friends allow more time for breaks. Place is amazing and makes you wonder how they built these during that time.
