Great chilling out!
Staffs were really friendly and so helpful. Room is very clean and there was daily housekeeping. Soap and shampoo and towel was available Breakfast buffet was amazing😋 There was 2 swimming pool near the beach And finally the great view from the room. This hotel is close to bentota railway station but sometimes no stop there. Totally that was perfect experience

Definitely not value for money
Would not recommend - it’s rotting. Left stay early. More staff and cleanliness required to meet standards. Poor/no wifi in rooms (not just me - families sent children to lobby for electronic time in the evening as only place with service) Breakfast was cold - tables dirty attracting flies - need more staff - only tried once and returned the next day but walked out again immediately. Need to upgrade their reception systems - I wasn’t on a printed out list of people checking in that day causing delay. For the price paid the standard was not sufficient.

Your staff is amazing. Nothing is too difficult for them. It makes a world of difference when they bend over backwards to make your stay a comfortable one. Good was great too. Your chefs were willing to cook any special needs.

THEFT ALERT!!
For all those who are thinking of booking this hotel BE AWARE!!! A SUBSTANTIAL ABOUT OF CASH WAS STOLEN FROM WIFE'S BAG!!!,the power kept going on and off numoueous times during our stay,when I got back to Colombo I realised $3200 was missing i got in touch with the hotel asap who apparently looked at the cctv footage failed to tell us is there is no footage capture during the power outages, during one of the outages our money was stolen diapite the room being locked . I even got in contact with the GM of this hotel who who replied with no apology or empathy. i have contacted the sri lanakan tourism police who are investigating the incident,I know I won't get my money back however for future tourist who visit this hotel be AWARE hopefully you won't go though what I have encounterd.

This alleged incident of losing money was initially reported to the hotel around 2PM over a phone call (after you checked-out at 10:30AM) with a request to check on the CCTV footage. Our front-office manager has asked at that time whether you are certain that the money was lost while you were at the hotel. You have informed that you are not certain whether the money was lost at the hotel. We carried-out an internal investigation regarding this alleged incident and have found that none of the staff members entered the room during the time mentioned. As the matter has already been escalated to the Tourist Police in Colombo, subsequently Bentota OIC visited the Hotel and the room boy was questioned and all CCTV recordings have been reviewed. We would like to further extend our support to the local Police Authorities should they require. Please reach-out to our Guest Relations Manager on for further assistance. Thank You.

A huge dissapointment
1- The hotel staff are very slow, and the problem is they are slow when it comes to solving issues, it was 10PM I am about to sleep and had to call the reception 3 times to ask for someone to come and fix the AC which was very very loud as if I am in a factory not a hotel room. 2- The bedsheets were not clean, the first time I asked the staff to come and change the bed sheets and they did, they changed it with another dirty sheets, so it seems that all bed sheets they have are dirty. 3- The water was cold from the tab till I called them to come and fix the water heater, so staying for 2 nights I had to face 3 issues which were not all properly solved. such a dissapointment.

Horrible customer service The servers are slow and have a lot of attitude. The rooms had termites and were sprayed for bugs everyday cause of the unhygienic maintenance

In the tropics it is common to encounter these harmless moths who gets attracted to any place that has light when it's dark in the surroundings. When the matter was raised, the hotel staff has used a spray to prevent moths from entering the room and have advised to keep the terrace door closed. The location of this property is excellent. We had booked 4 rooms at the property through expedia for 1 night. I had emailed them multiple times asking for driver accommodation but got no response. Finally i called and asked and they said they will provide driver accomodation if it is not full but when I reached there they said they dont provide driver accomodation for bookings made through third party website like expedita. That was a big let down. Other than that the stay was good. Rooms are neat and clean and very close to the beach. Breakfast buffet was really good.

The location was great all be it a little too quiet at times. The hotel was well maintained and had a wonderful breakfast ...although found the other food (lunch and dinner) to not be as good so we spent our evenings dining across the road at Mallis , Trax and happy garden . Seafood great in Mallis and the authentic Sri lankan curry was great at happy garden also a third of the price than the hotel! Nirodha the sous chef was amazing , so friendly and helpful in explaining the dishes...we looked forward to our chats with him at breakfast. Another tip, dont exchange money at the hotel. The rate is poor in comparison and they were overly fussy about the condition of the notes. I went down the road and exchanged at a much better rate and all notes were accepted regardless of pen marks!???! We were lucky enough to be there over the Sri Lankan new year and the hotel put on various games and treats which we loved. The staff also got involved and was great to interact with everyone. Pin the eye on the elephant was a particular favourite although i wasnt close!! I did notice there were some vip guests that were being fawned over during this time which to us was a bit ridiculous as if you had faith in your hotel then you wouldnt feel the need to do this and offer extra things that the other guests didnt have...provided us a chuckle and entertainment to the happenings though. Overall it was a good experience ,the reception lady was always smiling and chatty and Chadia in des cafe to.

The location and view is just awesome. Chef was kind and gracious enough. Men at restaurant were good. Though they too forget to get water despite being asked no of times. They just forget. Don’t know how? Apart from these everything was horrible. I would never ever recommend surf to anyone. No phone, no power points, need to remind no of times for each and everything. They not even extend greeting while we checking out. Not been given any feedback too. Failed in courtesy. Overall mine was not a pleasant experience. I would give just 1 star

EXTREMELY POOR SERVICE! STAY AWAY!!!!!
i must say i was very disappointed. It was the lowest point of an otherwise wonderful trip. the service and specially the attitude of the staff was simply awful. You wouldn't expect that kind of treatment towards strangers on the street even less towards actual customers. The hotel was not helpful at all in solving any issues that i was raising. The rooms didn't have any water bottles or even towels. After requesting them several times I had to actually resort to going down to reception myself to get a towel. The lights and the electricity in the room kept going off during the whole stay. I was reliably informed that most hotels in the area offer accommodation for the tour guides and in fact this hotel offers the same service. However upon arrival I was told that all rooms were booked, which I soon found out was a lie because I went on their website and tried booking a room for the same night and they had plenty of rooms available. I did not appreciate being lied to. I still have some issues that I am trying to solve with the hotel for my booking but they are not helpful and most of the time they don't even answer my calls or emails. Not just my calls but they also seem to be ignoring calls to them from Hotels.com (which was the company i made the original booking with) overall I am highly disappointed with this hotel and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Stay away from them but definitely visit the area it is beautiful.

The pool was fabulous and having two was a bonus. There is surf lessons right next door also, so we didnt have to walk very far at all. There are such lovely treats with this hotel such as the delicious cocktails, the pool lunch and bar service, the friendly staff, beds and pillows are really comfy. What lets it down is the basics - towels in bathrooms are dated, the door of the bathroom stays closed so the room is damp, and in need of a redo. On our last day a lot of staff slow down around you and pretty much hover to get a tip, which is the norm i know in SL, but it still disheartening. Overall lovely hotel, sitting by the pool or beach all day is amazing! Both of which we found to be really spotless. I'd still recommend.

Very low service standards, outdated hotel
Service was really bad, we order some soda and it tooled them an hour to send to the room. We had made two separate bookings as we decided to extend our stay, but didn't make it for the first night; that first night rate included breakfast and not the second night, reason why we requested it to be transferred to the second night, receptionist said they will check with the manager and call us on our room, but this never happened. Very disappointed with the service of front desk. This hotel is quite old, I will not recommend it. Also for a nice beach, rather go to Mirissa and not to Bentota.

Amazing hotel with amazing breakfast
We a family of 12 adult and 1 child recently stayed in this hotel for 2 nights. Our initial encounter was not pleasant as we have arrived at 5pm only but our rooms were not ready. After a 7 hour journey from Nuwara Eliya to Bentota, we were all knackered and just wanted to get into our rooms to rest but was delayed. The manager tho had upgraded us to the rooms right infront of the pool. Though the upgrade was timely but we had to wait for each rooms to be given the keys. However the manager made up for it again by providing us with light snacks. The rooms were amazing and the beds were extremely comfortable. Imagine waking up to the pool and the beach right infront of you. The sunset was a spectacular view as well. Breakfast was amazing with vast spread of food. From continental to english to typical Sri Lankan food. Heard the dinner was good to tho we opted t have it outside. Overall we really enjoyed our stay in The Surf Bentota and would highly recommend to anyone.

Amazing location Friendly Staff Pristine Beach with soft Sand and a very long beav front Though I was very early at the property with a check In time of 2:00 pm the staff was able to arrange for a room and check me in The rooms are very spacious and I had the larger room category even the smaller once looked big comfortable. Very clean room and very spacious and clean bathroom All rooms are ocean facing and so it's a great advantage for this property... This also makes the Beach Front a very large one for this property The Bentota Beach is very clean and beautiful with very less local people venturing on the Beach and if they do they usually keep to the public area and also very friendly and non intrusive. The property has 2 well placed and beautiful Long Pools - really long probably 150 mtrs And just a step outside my room with a comfortable sitting Hotel also offers some group activities The beach offers a lot of water sports such as surfing water scooter and even para gliding as option.. The hotel itself has a great breakfast spread and even better dinner and I had taken a package inclusive of Dinner which actually worked really well for the kind of spread and real value for Money... Not to mention the Live Piano Recital during the dining and an in house club / Disco This property is a short 5 min walk from Bentota Town so easy access to all amenities such as Currency Exchange ATM and Bank local shopping and wine / Beet store

excellent! The Seafood restaurant could be better.... but on complaining on the quality of the fish, the chef personally came and re did the fish. The Chef and other staff did make sure from that point on that we were happy with the food.... the buffet morning and evening is a good spread and overall the experience was wonderful.... was one of the highlights of the trip. thank you.

Our stay (only for one night) was superb.The room on ground floor facing the ocean was spacious and clean.A/c and all other gadgets worked well.The staff was courteous and helpful.The breakfast spread was outstanding in variety and quality.The only glitch if I may call it so was that the large bed had a wooden collar about 25 cms above floor 25 cms wide all round, ostensibly to get off gently.I got my shin hit a few times (bumped into it),never seen anything like that before

Great location by the beach. Great stay.
My partner and I stayed at the Surf Hotel for 10 days in February 2018. Our room was a good size with a comfy double bed, good clean bathroom and a great view of the pool and beach from our balcony. We could literally roll out of bed and on to a sun lounger in the morning and roll off the sun lounger into the sea...fantastic location. We stayed bed and breakfast, this was great for us, there was a good choice of food on offer. The omelette station and the fresh fruit cut and prepared on request was a real bonus for us! We never went hungry. There are plenty of nice restaurants very close by. The hotel also has a tuk tuk station right outside with drivers happy to take you where ever you need to go and always very helpful. The hotel staff were always very helpful and always had a smile on their face, the service at times was very slow but it was a small price to pay. We had a very enjoyable stay, very relaxing and would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Great beach side location, badly maintained room
The beach views from the room and the fact you could just walk out of the room and on to the beach sand was just awesome. The sunset view from the beach was great too. The room and service though was hardly worthy of the 4.5 star rating they had. My wife and I arrived at the hotel around 5 PM, but our room wasn't ready and they made us wait a good 10-15 minutes before getting us to our room. The room itself was not well maintained, from paint peeling off the walls to rusted door hinges and sink drain, scratched furniture and a sink that drained really slow. Judging by the room's state, I would have thought of it as 2 stars. The buffet looked great but seemed over priced ($25 per person). I skipped it and went to their cafe, where the prices were more reasonable. Ordered pasta and veg fried rice - they both tasted horrible, so we ended up not eating it and walked out to a nearby restaurant for dinner.

This is was the most disappointing hotel ever, it is very expensive, dirty and old, don't waste your money!!! Worst hotel for our honeymoon. There is train station right outside so don't excpect to sleep much, the walls are very thin, you can hear everything, the rooms are very run down and the air conditioner is very loud. On our second day we had three people knock on our room door, pushed their way through and said we need to change your mattress. Unsure what was going on we said okay we will leave and come back. 3 hours later we returned to no bed and all of the pillows and doona on our luggage? I wasn't feeling great so I wanted to lay down in the cool air but we couldn't! So we had to wait another 20mins for them to fix it!!! That same afternoon I asked for a taxi the next day, they called us at 9pm to confirm when we were checking out. The next morning they called our room at 7:30am to see when we were leaving!!!! I was fast asleep after not sleeping at all that night due to the train and noises, when I told them I was asleep they laughed... The food options here are horrible, at one stage we ordered a side of French fries to have the tomato sauce (ketchup) served in a shot glass that had pink lipstick stains on it... gross! And might I add the chips were cold... I don't understand how they could be so cold!!! If you want to no how to call reception or room service, don't bother, there are no menus in the room and no information about the hotel at all!

Overpriced, Unhelpful Staff and terrible service
Our room had ants and termites all over. The bed covers had stains everywhere. The staff was extremely unhelpful with a lack of coordination. We had to explain ourselves repeatedly and were not given a new room nor any other benefits to compensate us despite the huge sums we paid expecting quality service. Far too overpriced. Only positive was that it was right in front of the beach.

Staff is poorly trained. Rooms have ants, maybe even bed bugs. Rooms are not very clean, A/C does not work in rooms properly. Potential to be great because of then location but what a disappointment. They charge room fare upfront, so you are stuck after the first night. Manager on duty was not able to provide any compensation for the inconvenience.

Large Hotel By The Beach
Large Hotel With Large Pools I stayed at The Surf Hotel, Bentota for 2 nights. The hotel boasts a prime location on Bentota Beach. It covers a large area of land and it has two nice swimming pools, one of which is 52 meters long. They are both clean and well maintained. The rooms are large enough and have a balcony that overlooks the beach. However, they are infested by ants and other insects. We had to call the reception on two occasions to spray insect repellent. I had to use my personal mobile on both occasions as the room telephone was out of order. Moreover, the furniture needs renovation. The staff were very prompt and helpful and deserve a thumb up for their promptness and amiability. Breakfast is copious with many Sri Lankan specialties. Wherever we go in Sri Lanka we are informed that food is halal. I really appreciate this gesture from the Sri Lankan government which has made it mandatory to hotels to cater for Muslims. We also had dinner at the hotel coffee shop and enjoyed the seafood platters, though the salad portion was very little. We found out that the prices at this coffee shop were reasonable compared to other outside eateries. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves especially at the surf a d we had the opportunity to meet the squirrel there.

What works for it - lovely beach, locale, good sized room and bathrooms, friendly and helpful staff. What doesn't - Poor housekeeping, limited dining options, overall hotel needs renovations desperately. Coffee shop is simply poor. Room service = Coffee shop menu. This hotel pretends its 4star or 4star + but hardly feels it. In fact there is nothing luxurious about any of it, neither the lobby nor the rooms. This is a Bad-value-for-money hotel with a great beach as its saving grace.

Great location and good value. Only downside is the restaurant staff. Lots of staff but no coordination. Several waiters spoke to us about our drink choice but no drink arrived until we had finished the main course. Completely spoilt the meal. Hotel is in lovely location and very good value. Great small restaurant across the road!

Disappointment in paradise
The hotels age is around 40 years old. It is a bit tired. Greeted by very friendly staff. Stayed 4 nights. Hotel exist in the 70's desperately needs a 21st century upgrade. Pool areas very good. Breakfast was good.

Best location on Bentota Beach front
Wonderful location on Bentota beach front having 2 pools and 2 full service restaurant and 1 cafe with gyms, disco and Arabic sisha lounge on beach front. Very easy access to the sea.

Great hotel... very poor housekeeping...
The bad Housekeeping Staff needs to be trained better. No towels in room, no towels even after reminding twice, extra bed missing in room. Staff is inexperienced to run a 4 star level hotel The Good Fantastic restaurant, location, pools and outside area impeccably maintained, I asked them a request to arrange a birthday cake on short notice and they came through In short definitely a 4 star facility but with a 3 star customer service... if the improve their service it is one of the bast places to stay

Bed bugs
I got bitten by ned bugs whilst here they took over 2 hours to move pur rooms no apology and was meant to receive a "fruit" basket after complaining and did not get that. Also when i checked out they tried to charge me twice for food and had nothing from them not even a sorry i am covered in bites and who knows if i am carrying them in my luggage as was not even offered to fumigate our belongings. From the moment we walked in we were treated like 2nd class as we had backpacks, tried to charge us $50 for a 2 hour early check in, ask for beach towels and get ignored again the room was not clean half stocked "toiletries" and ant infestation. My last 2 days of my holiday ruined by poor staff and i am covered in bed bug bites all over me as well as my face. I never complain but i am so upset with the whole service . On check out we are asked to come again and he will sort a discount but could not sort anything before waits until we pay then says it and laughs at us overall a disappointment and upset!
