Bradford’s oldest place of worship is a celebration of the art history, religious past and wars that have shaped the city and its people.

Bradford Cathedral is both an architectural masterpiece and the lifeblood of the city’s religious activity. This Gothic-style landmark stands proud in the heart of Bradford city center. Its interior is home to elaborate embroidery, work by one of England’s most famous window designers and pieces by renowned sculptors. Marvel at the artistic flair of Bradford Cathedral, experience its spiritual serenity and attend organ recitals.

Archaeological discoveries suggest that people have been worshipping on this site since A.D. 627. Today’s Gothic structure is the third edition of a church and dates back to the 15th century, with renovations from the 1700s to 1900s. Note the perpendicular tower. The Parliamentarians hung woolsacks from it during the English Civil War in a valiant attempt to shield it from attacks led by King Charles I’s Royalist army.

Step inside to see a long nave framed by magnificent arcades and an oak vaulted ceiling. The stained-glass windows are among the earliest works by William Morris, who was a pioneer of the Arts and Craft movement. See embroidery by Ernest Sichel and sculptures by John Flaxman. A hand-carved cross by Chris Shawcross portrays the life of the Irish monk Aidan of Lindisfarne.

Memorials inside the church pay homage to some of Bradford’s most famous residents, including astronomer Abraham Sharp and scientist Robert Lowry Turner. Look for plaques dedicated to the two world wars of the 20th century and the Bradford City stadium fire, in which 56 soccer fans lost their lives. Free choir concerts and organ recitals take place throughout the week. Ask about special events such as a combined hymn singing and curry dinner evening.

Several public bus lines stop close to the cathedral and Bradford Interchange transport terminal is a 10-minute walk away. There’s no on-site parking but drivers can use the metered car park at The Broadway Bradford shopping mall.

Bradford Cathedral is open daily and admission is free. Guided tours are available upon prior request via the attraction’s official website. Pick up an information leaflet at the entrance and take a self-guided tour.
