Visitors have to tour Canyon de Chelly with a native guide. We took 3 hour Jeep tour with a driver who had grown up inside the canyon. He talked more of local culture and how the Federal government has changed life for Native Americans than he did about the canyon itself. He did not seem to know the age of different petroglyphs or ruins in canyon. So, our tour was rather depressing and not at all what we expected. Chinle is a dusty, tiny, and challenged town... not your typical vacation experience!
Took one day to drive the rim, having a picnic near the Visitors' Center. Second day, took a tour with a fascinating Indian guide in the canyon.
we did a 4 hour late afternoon group tour that was excellent - more shade from sun. you get bounced around some so people with bad backs, etc. should beware.
