READ BEFORE BOOKING

I booked this resort far in advance based on the great reviews. The resort contacted me about 10 days before arrival and claimed I had I cancelled my reservation. I immediately contacted them to confirm I did not cancel and I planned to check-in unless prohibited by travel restrictions. Shortly thereafter they closed the resort and cancelled my reservation but refused to refund my payment or give me a credit for a future visit. It is definitely unusual times, but they acted unethically by claiming I had cancelled the reservation because they had already decided to close the resort to protect their staff from coronavirus, but did not want to refund my payment. I understand their decision to protect their staff, but I can't accept their decision to not refund my payment or provide a credit for a future visit since they decided to cancel my reservation, not me. The resort may be nice (I will never know for sure), but they acted unethically in this situation while most hotels were offering expanded cancellation policies due to the coronavirus. Consequently, I would suggest you book elsewhere if you are planning a trip to Tonga.

Upgrade to superior fale on arrival which was great. We just needed a week away from high-pressure jobs in a place with quality accomodation and service and hassle-free, which Fafa delivered in spades. Only downside was not being able to heat water in fale during the day, which other resorts allow.

Tranquility Island

I want to return. And probably will.

I really can't praise Fafa Island enough. The unit felt large and private with good air movement (although we were a bit hot some nights). But it was very, very, special. Relaxing, with amazing views and great swimming. What really makes the place wonderful is the staff - friendly in an honest and genuine way. Well, what makes the places wonderful is the staff and the food. It was _outstanding_. Day after day, night after night. One Sunday breakfast was just "good", ever other meal was excellent. While Fafa offers a half board and full board option, we found it was cheaper to just order off the menu - we just didn't need to eat 3 courses every dinner and 2 courses every lunch. The one negative, which is small, are the transfers. The boat trip is fine (although it takes ~45min rather than ~30min as often stated), but the company running the vans from the airport and away from the harbour after you leave Fafa are not very organised. They will get you there, but it may take a while, surprise about how many people are present (or not), and problems with luggage.

A slice of paradise

This is truly a paradise on earth! From the moment I was picked up by boat, I felt wonderfully taken care of. The superior fale was beautiful, with an excellent bed and a walk in closet! Lovely to have a hammock under the palm trees, what a relaxing view...and my own beach access, with only a neighbour or two in the distance! This is a perfect place to relax, go for a swim and enjoy the tasty vegetarian and vegan food (fish and meat menus are also available). Afterwards you return to your fale, read a book, listen to the waves and fall into a deep, deep sleep. The only bad thing is that at some time, the boat will bring you back to the main island, but by then your head is filled with memorable moments from carefree Fafa island.

A perfect place to go for relaxation and rejuvenation. The facilities were excellent, meals were outstanding and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The Managers were lovely and obviously work hard to maintain the pristine environment. Highly recommended!!

Basic. Needs upgrading.

Fafa Island Tonga Fafa Island is beautiful. Both the staff and service are excellent. Beds are comfortable. If you want an authentic Tongan experience with old original style falas ( houses made in the traditional way with woven walls and open spaces) then this is the place for you. We were given to believe that these homes were constructed about 30 years ago and little has changed since then There are large gaps in the weaving and the end walls stop short of reaching the roof meaning all manner insects are free to enter. Breakfast was poor, lunch and dinner okay. We had booked for 10 nights and given just one small bottle of water each, any more we had to buy. In the end we left after 6 days. Noticeably other guests also left early. Due to lack of boat availability fishing and snorkelling trips were cancelled. Transfers to and from the mainland were expensive but sadly there was no alternative so bear this in mind. Given that the rooms are not sealed clearly there is no air conditioning. We endured 31plus degrees Celsius in the bedroom, made worse by the mosquito nets stopping the breeze from the overhead fans. Internet was intermittent and poor. In summary, if you want comfortable air conditioned accommodation with modern services then this place is not for you.

A real treat! Must stay when you visit Tonga

My husband and I stayed 2 nights (as did our friends) before heading to Vava’u area to sail. We all loved Fafa Island Resort. Our only regret was that we didn’t plan on spending more time there. The property is beautiful, the food delicious and the staff very friendly and helpful.

What an amazing place - I was worried as we had been there before and I thought it might not be as good the second time, but of course it was! Such a lovely quiet delightful piece of paradise and the food was so much better than last year. I hope I get to go back again with my husband.

As promised...

Small, private, solar power, beach access - all as promised. Paddle boards translate to kayaks. Water was warm in June, snorkelling better than expected. Tea & instant coffee in room all stale but had taken our own (not into instant coffee!). You pay for all drinking water after the initial free bottle which was disappointing given the price bracket... Wine and beer selection poor; go for the cocktails.

Unique, quiet, tasty

A wonderful place to stay ... why would you stay anywhere else in Tonga!? Great fales, excellent restaurant, the kindest of staff, plenty of stuff to do right on the island, and tours on offer directly from the island or a by short boat ride back to the main terminal.

Tropical Gem

The reviews we read were certainly on the money. Fafa Island is a great place for a relaxing getaway. From the moment we were collected at the airport - we felt totally looked after. Didn't have to carry our bags which were delivered to our fale after arrival. Our fale - Huni - on the sheltered side of the island was perfect. Very private and seldom did we ever notice other guests on the island except when we visited the bar/restaurant. As a same sex couple we were a little concerned about Tonga as its laws are not very liberal. However - we'd recommend Fafa Island as a place to feel at home. The dinner meals were very nice - and the chef was obliging when we made special requests. As other reviewers have noted the prices are not cheap, so you might like to take some essentials with you like mixes for your duty free liquor, some breakfast cereal and UHT milk, and maybe day snacks. There are no cooking facilities available to guests and int he morning a thermos of hot water is delivered to each fale. The staff were generally very friendly - particularly the Fijian ones - and we appreciated the attentive management. Fafa Island is a place to relax - and it is a primary reason for going there. If you want adventure holiday - best try somewhere else. Despite unseasonable weather - we never felt room bound - being able to make the most of the complementary library and games available to guests.

Beautiful!

We stayed on Fafa Island for 4 nights, and it was just blissful. The staff were lovely - Laura and David were wonderful hosts. The beachside fales are gorgeous, the private outdoor bathrooms were amazing, and it was full of really nice little touches. The beach is beautiful, and the whole thing felt very private - even though most of the other fales were occupied, it was rare to see someone on the beach. There's great snorkelling - we didn't manage to take a kayak out (far too lazy!) but we'd love to come back and fit in a kayak next time. It was perfect for a couple looking for a romantic and relaxing island getaway. Loved it!

Island close to mainland

Fafa island is a beaut spot for a short break the fales are gorgeous love the natural outdoor bathroom there is a but though this place only has one restaurant so it's very pricey especially with a family, most of the staff are lovely, and I really don't like the hidden costs like the boat transfers you have to pay for I found astounding when you book at an island you would presume they would be happy to get you there!! do not pay for the airport transfer as you can get a taxi to airport from the wharf for 40 Tongan dollar, also they tried to charge for my children to stay when I had already paid for four in our originally booking with expedia

Over priced

Having stayed in a good many places all over the Pacific Islands, I believe Fafa Island is not the best value for your holiday dollar. For the price we paid, one would expect to be able to get hot water for drinks 24 hours a day, we travelled with a flask, but not being big alcohol drinkers , it was annoying to traipse around to the restaurant every time we wanted coffee. Along with other visitors, we often found it hard to identify our fale. No path lighting, we used the beach to find our way in the dark. Took up several torches and a modern lamp. The old kero lamps were smelly, the bird life is prolific, but don't attempt to leave much unattended, the pukekos were into every thing. Meals were okay, we went a la carte, just eating when we were hungry, not enough vegetables for us, if we had been more active,I think it would cost a fair bit to satisfy a healthy appetite. Staff are friendly, but overall this place is more comfortable with European guests and priced accordingly .
