It occupied a strategic location between the Moravian and Hungarian empires, and after conversion into a fortress, was important in defending against the Ottoman Empire. It later became a summer residence for the Habsburg family. It's undergoing a slow process of restoration, and was opened to the public in 2007. There are several rooms belonging to the municipal museum. The fortress site, which is surrounded by water, is quite large and makes for a pleasant walk.
