Some areas are very crowded/popular. They aren't "better", and you can find a less crowded area all along the coast. Definitely recommended over the busier (and dirtier) beaches north of here.

Nice budget hotel in the heart of San Fran. Clean, basic and well-furnished room. Convenient to Union Square and other areas. Just be mindful of vagrants and definitely park in a safe garage.

Our family spent one night while we visited San Francisco and the check in took a long time as we had three different rooms but we were asked for IDs for each person in each room and that took forever. The staff member was overwhelmed by the process. We had a car and the key didn’t work when leaving the parking lot. NO amenities. Just
shower gel/shampoo and conditioner bottles in the shower. NO soap at the sink.
Other than the above, the breakfast was delicious and very well organized for the large number of guests. Convenient location for tourists.
