Although known for its cold conditions, this charming riverside city has a warm atmosphere and friendly residents.

Relax in tranquil parks and learn how the town of International Falls struggled to become the popular place it is today. Enjoy long hours on the fantastic golf course or stroll along the pristine Rainy River. The town is a great place to stop off either before or after exploring nearby Voyageurs National Park.

Nicknamed the “icebox of the nation” because of the freezing temperatures that are a constant through the winter, pretty International Falls was founded by lumberjacks and hunters who came here to ply their trades in settlers’ times.

Visit the Koochiching County Historical Museum to find out about the hurdles trappers, traders, hunters and settlers faced during the frigid winters in these isolated northern lands. The museum is located in leafy Smokey Bear Park, recognizable by its 26-foot (8-meter) statue of a bear with two cubs. Erected in 1953, this figure has become the national symbol of forest protection. In addition to the museum, the park also has picnic tables and lots of space to play. Bring food and outdoor toys and spend an afternoon here.

Play a round of golf at the Falls Country Club, a 10-minute drive west from town. This 18-hole course is surrounded be gorgeous woodland and borders the rushing waters of Rainy River.

The city hosts festivals throughout the year. Arrive during the frosty winter season for the premier event, the Icebox Days Festival that takes place around the middle of January. You’ll have plenty to do, with food, games and entertainment as well as the Freeze Yer Gizzard Blizzard Run.

International Falls is in northern Minnesota on the American-Canadian border, a 50-minute drive northwest of Voyageurs National Park. Select from numerous lodges, hotels and motels in the heart of town and restaurants offering traditional and international menus.

Explore the exciting city ofInternational Falls set among a landscape of peaceful parkland and superb woodland.

"Our rooms were very clean. The rooms were small and did not have a lot of shelve spaces. The unusual point about this property was that it did not have receptionist in the property. I used text message to communicate with property staff. The text communication was fast and present."
