Ein als „Lebender Gitterzaun“ bezeichnetes Gehölzkonstrukt aus Linden. Der lebendige Zaun befindet sich auf dem Arboretum-Gelände der LVG in Erfurt. Dabei wurden junge Pflanzen eng aneinander schräg gesetzt. Die Kreuzungsstellen werden von der Rinde befreit und eng miteinander verbunden um ein Zusammenwachsen zu fördern. Nach Erreichen der Stammhöhe wird die Krone regelmäßig geschnitten und Seitentriebe am Stamm entfernt. Früher war diese Zaunkonstruktion wohl häufiger anzutreffen, vor allem im Gebirge (bspw. im Tessin). Der lebende Gitterzaun hielt frei weidende Ziegen von Gärten und kleinen Ackerflächen fern. Mit Auswahl geeigneter Gehölze konnte der Kronenschnitt als Viehfutter dienen.
