When i checked in I was not happy about the size of the bed because it was not the standard queen size bed. However the manager on duty Nicholas was very helpful in getting me another room. In the morning i had to leave @9am leaving my partner sleeping. When she was leaving at around 11am the lady Joan at the reception told her that I had not paid for the room. This was a big embarrasment.She went on and paid and called me. I went to the hotel and spoke to Joan who immediately apologised and promised to refund the money in 24hours.This never happened I have tried to get in touch with the manager Samuel Ssembatya to no success they keep on telling me he is in a meeting.Calling the hotel is a bit expensive because i came back to the USA.

Noise! Noise! Noise! There are a number of night clubs across the road from the hotel and the music was so loud I had to call reception at 1am and ask to be moved (which they did). The next morning I awoke to the banging of the construction activities happening on the other side of the property! I will not be staying at the Protea again in a hurry (if I do I would definitely find a room as far from the Kololo road as possible), I think Protea are going to struggle to fix this.

Nice hotel, central location
Hotel is in a good central position, food is excellent and staff are very helpful and welcoming, particularly Noah. However, lots of building going on in the area at the moment and so can be noisy during the day. At night, lots of loud music in the surrounding area, on Thursday and Friday night this went on into the early hours - is possible to drown it out a bit with the air conditioning but not great if you are a light sleeper

The noise challenge is one of our continuous efforts, overtime we have written to the responsible authorities, and so far we have managed to control construction to the day hours only as opposed to the 24hr construction that was happening last year. As for the club noise, we are currently following legal procedure to see that we negotiate a reasonable time of closure so that our Guests are not inconvenienced. We sincerely apologize for the discomfort this caused you. Our hope is that we shall succeed and have the old quiet nights in the near future. The hotel is conveniently located. Staff are polite and helpful. One issue which is ongoing is the water pressure in the bathrooms it is constantly surging so you are getting hot, then cold water every few seconds. It sometimes surges so much the shower head comes off it’s holder.

Protea good but...Protea Vs. Golf hotel
Stayed also in the Kampala Golf hotel so i can compare. Liked my room, the gym and the staff were quick on their feet and friendly. Internet was good enough for zoom and stable. Didn't like the breakfast since they switched from buffet to menu and only open at 8 am. In the Golf the rooms are good too and breakfast is buffet from 06.30 but the internet is dismal and bad altogether. Price though is much better than Protea and shops are more accessible as the Golf is adjacent to a mall.

Decent, but consider somewhere else.
The place was clean, the staff were mostly friendly and professional. At the end of the day, I just think there are better value hotels in Kampala. For being on the higher end of prices, there are few amenities (no pool, spa, etc.) I think the place was quite nice when I stayed here about 13 years ago but it felt like they hadn't done much to update it since then. I was disappointed that they called one of 'their drivers' for me who didn't know the place I needed to go but also had no data to pull up google maps with and look it up. I expected a bit more because of the price.

Travelled with a colleague. My room you had to literally climb over the toilet to access the shower. My colleague room had a leaky AC over his bed which dripped water sll night on the pillows. On telling reception thry promiwed to move him which they did not nor did they fix the AC. Gave this dump a second chance. Last chance. Done.

I liked the helpfulness of staff and follow up when I almost left an item. I did not like my first room. AC barely worked. Room 1, I was moved to Rm 11 and it was awesome. I would appreciate more vegetarian items. Very little to eat otherwise.

A comfortable, quiet, convenient base in Kampala
The hotel is well located in leafy, quiet Kololo Hill. Our room was spacious and comfortable, if slightly in need of renovations. This was not an issue and it was kept well cleaned and our toiletries replenished on a daily basis. The restaurant is in a pleasant area, with a varied selection on the menu. Food was generous and good, although not exceptional. WiFi is free, although pretty slow- better than many other places in Uganda. Service is friendly and helpful. All in all, we were very happy with the hotel as a base in Kampala.

Aaprt from being disapointed that the hotel did not reply or assist me with my request for transport from the airport, I found the hotel of a vey high standard. Check in was quick and painless, booking and pre-payment through Hotel.com went smoothly with no problems what so ever. The room was huge , however the bathroom was quite tight, but more than adequate for a single person traveling on business. Wifi and TV channels worked well. More than enough hot water for a decent shower. Food at the restaurant was very good, with good variety and lots of choices. Breakfast was excellent. Hotel is well positioned and close to the CBD, However it is a long drive to and from the airport in heavy traffic and this needs to be considered when planning your trip. Will definitely stay in the hotel again on my next visit.

Big difference between the rooms
I booked a standard garden room after looking at the room information. When I checked in I found the room to be very basic. Not even a fridge slippers or robe. Not having a fridge in a hot climate is unacceptable. I asked for a fridge and was told only executive rooms have them and all executive rooms were full. However when I showed them the room information on the hotels.com website that I should have a fridge robe slippers etc they were shocked and upgraded me. The executive room was excellent but the gap in class between the 2 levels of room is huge. The food was excellent as was the service. I'll stay again but only in executive rooms

-Asked to be moved to the Protea Entebbe - NO I had booked through Expedia and despite having received the funds from Expedia still - NO Expedia, when called, was helpful but could not reach the hotel to make the changes -Ordered veg samosas - got meat -Asked for cigarettes in the bar - NO -Asked to change $500 - NO - only $200 -They gave me money in 50,000 notes - asked for change - NO -They gave me a voucher on check-in for a free bottle of wine - they did not explain and till I read the small print, only if you eat a full meal in the hotel - needless to say after that I made a point of eating out every night. This hotel needs to train their staff and management to think out of the box.

Further to your feedback the following is the feedback: - Expedia.com bookings have to be cancelled and rebooked directly with Expedia.com, whilst the hotel will not charge for night's you have not spent at the hotel we cannot transfer bookings and payment made through a 3rd party. We have followed up with Expedia.com directly ourselves as we have received no communication to date from them - We apologize for the mix up with the samosas and have addressed the issue with our kitchen and the corrective disciplinary actions and training were taken with the relevant STAFF to ensure this does not occur again in future - We have noted your disappointment in only being able to change a limited amount of money at the front desk at a time and will take it into consideration to possibly change larger amounts in the future, we have also noted that larger amounts of change may need to be available at the front desk in future - Cigarettes, tobacco products both use of and the selling of these products is illegal in Uganda hence you not being able to purchase any cigarettes. Whilst the inconvenience is regrettable this is unfortunately a national legislation that the hotel is required to abide by - We have noted your feedback on the complimentary beverage or bottle of wine offered but please note the voucher does specify when dining with us, the voucher is offered to GUESTS as a value addition if you stay with us and choose to dine with us too Your interest and concern are therefore extremely valuable to us, and we hope that you consider staying with us again soon. Clean business-class hotel in central Kampala
Overall a very nice hotel in central Kampala, in a quiet neighborhood. Pricey, but less than some other business-class hotels in Kampala. Very spacious rooms, reasonably good wi-fi (worked for Skype voice, with only slight delays), very clean, good AC, with a decent gym/workout room. Breakfast and lunch buffets were fresh, varied, and mostly tasty, with good espresso drinks and custom omelettes at breakfast (and Bloody Mary's and champagne/mimosas included, for those who aren't there for work!). Fresh juices at all meals too. Staff is very attentive and helpful; check-in and check-out were efficient and organized. OK, but management needs to act
For Kampala standards, this hotel is good for business travelers. Restaurant staff is very friendly and helpful. Clearly insufficient, however, is the wireless network in the hotel. It is very patchy and with a minimal bandwidth. Furthermore, the hotel changed the internet code during my stay (without announcement) which had me adjust all my devices. An unnecessary nuisance. A further nuisance was the fact that the room door key did not function every evening when I came back to the hotel. In my case the room was at the far end of the hotel - so this gets noticed as a time-waster. Room for improvement is also noted in the service approach of front desk staff. They are a bit slow and not really forthcoming (always considering that we are in Uganda, not applying the higher international Marriott standards). 10 minutes for a simple check-out procedure is clearly too long.

Comfortable and convenient. Needs a few upgrades.
I enjoyed my stay. It's clear that the hotel is aging. My room was huge, though. The internet was patchy, strong in the reception near the router, very weak in my room. Would be nice to get better coverage. However, all that being said, I will continue to go back. They treat me like family.

Reasonably comfortable and secure hotel.
After booking this hotel accommodation through Expedia, no email address was available for the hotel to contact them directly for any personal queries. Expedia contacted them directly and supplied their possible email but it never worked when tried. Also, at the hotel they allocated us a basic room with no fridge facility and very sparse furnishings. I had to go down and talk to one of the reception staff to offer us an alternative room with adequate room facilities. He said some rooms were reserved for executive patrons. One would not expect this from generally five-star rated Marriott Hotels with above average facilities and standards. However, we were offered an alternative room with was a bit better than the last one.
