The Lofoten War Memorial Museum chronicles Norway’s role in World War II. It contains uniforms and other artifacts to express tales of courage, brutality and woe between 1940 and 1945. Learn of the events that took place in Lofoten, resulting in a victory for the Allies.

Browse the various items that tell the story of the Lofoten raid, which is considered the first true Allied victory. In response, the Nazis built bunkers and military strongholds in the area. Explanations are in Norwegian and English. See old photos of the surrounding town of Svolvær, which became the most fortified municipality in Norway. Many of these constructions still stand today.

Learn of the cruelty of Gestapo officer Siegfried Fehmer, who was captured and executed. Many of the soldiers are portrayed as humans who fell victim to tragic historical events. Inspect the complete uniforms, true to their original layout. Find out about Adolf Hitler’s secret passion for Disney, with what are allegedly his cartoon drawings of Snow White characters.

Speak with the curator about his passion for war memorabilia. The museum has a vast library showcasing a variety of literature related to World War II. See the original pamphlets and posters from the era. Walk around the tranquil area outside the museum and enjoy the scenic views of the mountains hovering beyond the water.

The museum is open daily from morning until late evening in summer and will open at request in winter. Call ahead to check exact times. There is a fee to enter, with discounts for kids. Bring toddlers for free.

The Lofoten War Memorial Museum is in the heart of the Svolvær community in northwestern Norway. Take a boat to Svolvær Harbor and walk east for about 10 minutes to get here. Visit nearby landmarks, such as the Svolvær Church, the Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park and nearby islands.
