Notting Hill, London hotel rooms at the Independent

"Shower in my room malfunctioned (shower head came loose from the holder on the wall while warming up) and sprayed an inch of water on the floor. Had to use all the towels to soak it up and couldn’t shower. Receptionist was apologetic and moved me into a new room, I don’t blame them for the conditions but clearly management is terrible. I was out all day and returned late night, and all I wanted was a hot shower, finally. This second shower did not even have a place to hang the shower head so I had to awkwardly squat in the tub (which was old and had filthy jets!!) and could not wash my hair. I was too exhausted to deal with it and didn’t want to move to another third room so I just went to bed. The mattress in my second room was horrible, I could feel the springs and woke up with a bruise. There were also holes in the sheets. There was a kettle and mugs for tea, in the first room the inside of the kettle was gross and one cup was soiled. I didn’t bother looking at the tea station in the second room. The rooms had “charming” old locks and keys which were incredibly difficult to maneuver. I had to put whatever I was holding down and kneel on the floor to look directly into the keyhole to get it in correctly. Staff was kind and I felt safe in the location, that is about all I can say that is positive. Don’t be fooled by the charming appearance. Never again. "

"As soon as you walk in, there was a very strong cologne like smell. It was in the entire hotel. It made me nauseous and gave me a headache. I booked to identical room for two nights. One for me And one for a Family member. My room was significantly smaller than the one my family member had. Why are rooms the same price and yet not the same size. Very disappointed Rooms were by the street and it was very noisy. Hotel front desk attendant was very rude when I checked in. Towel heater in the bathroom was not working at all. Shower did not drain properly "

"The hotel is clean, offers good dining and bar options. Its location is great. It is close to the Tube to get around town or to/from Heathrow. Also a good variety of restaurants in a comfortable walking distance. There is also the Portabella market on weekends. It's a good choice whether your trip is short or long. I have no hesitation to recommend it."
