This small, wooden fire station in the heart of Ponce is a historical and architectural monument.
This historic firehouse is named for the traditional hand-pumped water units once used on the island. Situated in Ponce’s town center, the Parque de Bombas is hard to miss. Considered by many to be one of the most iconic building in Puerto Rico, the small wooden structure is painted in vibrant reds and blacks, the traditional colors of Ponce. The former fire station houses a museum that unveils the history of southern Puerto Rico, and includes fascinating information about Ponce, the firefighters and the great fire of 1899. A visit to the Parque is a great excursion for history buffs and families with young children, who will enjoy the traditional fire trucks.
The main exhibit explains the story behind the great fire of 1899. The fire that threatened the town of Ponce was defeated by seven fearless firefighters from the neighborhood of Parque de Bombas. These men became heroes within the town and the museum is named in their honor. Memorabilia and photographs from the early 20th century can be seen at the museum, including the axes used to fight fires.
The historic fire truck that serves as the centerpiece of the museum is a favorite of young visitors and a great photo backdrop. This truck has been lovingly restored and is painted vibrantly like the building.
Parque de Bombas is located in the town of Ponce, in southern Puerto Rico. Visitors staying in Ponce can reach the Parque on foot, or by joining a bus tour, which takes visitors to all the major attractions in town on a two-hour guided tour. Visitors staying elsewhere on the island can reach Ponce by car, and there is ample free parking in the town. Parque de Bombas is open daily and admission is free.
