Holiday Views | Lunar New Year 2018: The smoke inside Quan Âm pagoda was really intense on this day, more intense than any other pagoda I’ve ever been to. At first I thought only the sheer number of people and the incense sticks being burned attributed to it, and then I felt something hit me on my shoulder. Looking at my shoulder I saw a big chunk of ash, naturally I looked up to see where it came from and saw the sight of dozens upon dozens of burning coil incense hanging from overhead.

Holiday Views | Lunar New Year 2018: The grounds of Quan Âm Pagoda consist of two areas separated by Lao Tu Street. On one side of the street you have the pagoda and on the other sits a garden with an artificial pond that houses a miniature scale island in the middle. The algae bloom is quite extensive with just about the entire surface covered, however there is quite a bit of life as plenty of turtles can be seen swimming about. The wall behind the pond depicts three panels with Taiost motifs of a dragon as well a The Jade Emperor. The garden and pond are nice little additions to this pagoda that I haven’t seen with others this size and gives it big points on the charm factor despite being a little small in stature.

Holiday Views | Lunar New Year 2018: The Quan Âm Pagoda is a Chinese style Buddhist pagoda in district five’s China town built in the 19th century. The pagoda is named after the Goddess of Mercy Quán Tế Âm Bồ Tát or Quan Âm for sort. If you ever want to see a Chinese Pagoda or Temple firing on all cylinders, the day after the Lunar New Year would be a good place to start. I was initially in search of a dragon dance performance and was led here. No dragons but I found myself staying here quite long as there was so much going on I wanted to capture it all.

The hotel itself is a little old and tired but it goes with the city! The bar on the roof was always out of wine but the other bar which is just one floor below always had wine but they never would take a bottle or two up which I didn’t understand. Hotel in a great location, didn’t matter which way you walked when you came out of the hotel all directions had something to offer.
