The wrought-iron bombard “Dulle Griet” (she-man) pointing at the Friday Market Square. This 15th-century supergun got initially the nickname “big red devil” because of the (original) red colour. A similar bombard, also made in Belgium, can be found in Edinburgh Castle: “Mons Meg”. Weight: 12.250 kg. Length: 5 metre. Bore diameter: 640 mm. Projectiles (stones): 295 kg. Range: 1800 metre

“Vrijdagsmarkt” or Friday Market Square with the statue of Jacob van Artevelde. The Flemish leader Jacob van Artevelde managed to undo the boycott of English wool imports during the Hundred Years’ War between England and France in the 14th century. The textiles industry in Ghent was revived and Artevelde was hailed a hero. In 1345 he was murdered during a riot. Since 1863 his statue has been pointing to England. #Ghent #History
