• Leave all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hairspray in your checked baggage. Any liquids or gels in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) won't be allowed on. Pointed or sharp objects, like your precious pocket knife, and products which are explosive or flammable, such as aerosols and fuels, are also restricted.

• The key to a comfortable flight can be as simple as your choice of clothing. Prepare yourself for varying temperatures by layering up. That way you'll stay nice and warm if the cabin gets chilly. Shoes like sandals and heels are best left for other occasions. Even though they may be your favorites, opt for flat, closed-toed footwear like slip-ons. Your feet will thank you for it.
• It's likely you've heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged periods of sitting. There's plenty you can do to lower your risk. Don a pair of compression socks, stay well hydrated and keep your legs and feet moving. Do a few laps of the cabin or perform some simple exercises in your seat.

• Airport security personnel first need to determine that you have a valid passport and matching boarding pass before you can proceed any further. Keep them close by.
• The X-ray machine comes next. Empty your pockets and remove anything metal that is likely to beep. This includes things like headphones or earphones, as well as heavy jackets or coats. They'll all need to go on the X-ray conveyor belt.
• Electronic devices like phones and laptops will also have to go on a tray for inspection. No need to worry though, you'll be back online soon enough.
• Can't travel without your favorite perfume or cologne? No problem. As long as the volume is no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and it's stored in a clear zip-close bag, you're permitted to bring it with you in your carry-on bag.
• It's also likely that you'll be required to take your shoes off to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on shoes is always a clever idea.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, pack them in your checked luggage. They won't be allowed in the cabin.
