Explore the remains of two U.S. military forts dating back to the 19th century and find yourself in a world of frontier outlaws, military soldiers and federal lawmen on the edge of Indian Territory. Peruse the exhibitions within the historic forts and learn about the dark history of the Indian removal policy. Uncover the stories of the people who passed through the United States Federal Court for the Western District of Arkansas in this expertly preserved national historic site.

Stroll across the neat lawns and check out the 19th-century brickwork of the main building. This old barracks building also functioned as a courthouse and jail during its 80-year tenure and now contains the site’s visitor center. Explore the center to see a range of exhibitions that reveal the site’s intriguing heritage. Learn about the fort’s military history, which spans between 1817 and 1871. Trace the timeline of western expansion and the tragic outcomes of the Federal Indian policy.

The stories about the “Hanging Judge” Isaac Parker will chill you when you explore the courtroom and a recreation of the gallows used by the federal court. Visit the old Commissary building, which dates back to 1838. In the fort grounds, see the foundations of the former fort building, which operated between 1817 and 1824.

Walk along the Trail of Tears to experience a moving wayside exhibit along the Arkansas River. This paved trail commemorates the forced relocation of Native Indian nations after the Indian Removal Act was passed in 1830. Another trail leads to pretty Belle Point.

Fort Smith National Historic Site is located in the town of Fort Smith on the border of Oklahoma. The grounds, paved interpretive trails, picnic tables and outdoor exhibitions are open daily, year-round. The visitor center, gallows and Commissary building have closures on Christmas Day, New Years’ Day and Thanksgiving. Entry tickets for these three buildings are valid for 7 days and children under 16 years of age can enter for free when accompanied by an adult. Explore the grounds for free.
