Explore the cells and underground tunnels of a prison that housed transported British convicts and notorious Australian prisoners for over 130 years.

Fremantle Prison was constructed during the 1850s. During Australia’s convict era it housed prisoners transported from England and Ireland. In 1886 the jail was handed over to thecolonial authorities to house locally-sentenced prisoners. The prison closed in 1991. Today the historic building is preserved as an internationally recognized World Heritage Site. Theformer prison houses a museum with artifacts and artwork by former prisoners and hosts a range of exciting tours.

"Step inside and do time" with Fremantle Prison’s experienced guides on a range of fascinating tours, including Convict Prison, Behind Bars and True Crime. These Prison Day Tours highlight convict and prison life, daring escapes and colorful characters in tales laced with prison humour.

Visitors with a spirit for adventure can descend 65 feet (20 meters) below the prison to explore just over half a mile (1 kilometer) of tunnels on foot and by boat on a Tunnels Tour or delve into the darker side of the prison's history at night on a spooky Torchlight Tour.
